calibrating two subs with Denon 3801

The 3801 only has one line level sub output. I have one sub at the front of the room ( approx 14 feet from my sweetspot) and the rear sub near the back wall and approx 6 feet from my sweetspot. I am using a splitter to run the back sub. I calibrated the front sub with the distance set at 14 feet. To do so, I had to shut off the rear sub. Now, how do I calibrate the rear sub for a distance of 6 feet ? I shut the front sub down and calibrated the rear sub as best I could without changing the 14 foot distance used for the front sub.I did have to tame the rear sub by turning the volume down a bit. Everything sounds okay, but the distance thing hsa been bothering me. Is it all that important for the sub ? I know it is for the rest of the speakers, but maybe I am worrying about nothing as far as the sub goes.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.BTW, the front sub is a Boston Acoustics 100 watt and the rear is a Yamaha 50 watt.

George, I tried a dual sub configuration at the back of the room for a while, and really, it just didn't do that much for me, but it was a very small sub. At the time, I had Infinity Kappa 7.1s on the rear, and got all the base I needed from them. Now I have less bassy Concertinos.

Anyway, as you probably know adding a second sub at the same output level as teh first adds +3 dB when the subs are positioned optimally together.

Taking into consideration your several feet closer to this sub, if you don't want it to be distracting, I would say set it to somewhere between half output, and -3 dB from the 1 sub number. That's just a guess. I don't know of a way to scientifically set this, and not sure anyone has ever stated a right or wrong number for that. TV may know if anyone does.

    Hope this helps,

    Lex

      Lex-
Thanks for your suggesion. It seemes to work just fine. Since I added the back channels I felt the extra sub in the rear would help. I have to say I prefer watching movies with both subs on after experimenting with leaving the back sub off. Again, thanks for your help.

I got to thinking, is it plus 3 dB or plus 6? Hmmm. I just stay to removed from the numbers anymore. lol.

If you go from 1 powered subwoofer to an identical unit...it's +6dB.

If you have a passive woof, and you go from 50w to 100w...it's +3dB

If you have two passives and you;ve gone from 1 sub and 100w to 2 subs with 50w each...it's +3dB(assuming they are indentical)

Using multiple woofs in multiple locations can get a bit tricky...but many have claimed a surround subwoofer works well for them. After you've lived with the current configuration a while...try putting both units in the best corner of the room...and just split the LFE output of the receiver for both.

Maybe you all can offer some ideas. And I am praying that SOME ONE out there has had to put the sub behind the seating area! ops: and I hope that they can give me some feed back. Here are the facts.

When to Put Sub Out of Phase?
            by Bing Fung
I have moved my sub to the back of the listening room as I don't have enough room up front. Should I be placing my sub out of phase for this position?

I have switch back and forth in phase, but don't seem to notice a difference. If there was I would give the slight edge to the sub in...

I have spoken with Behringer and they have shown serious interest in designing a replacement for the BFD that is more suited to the consumer market. As many of you may already know... the DSP1124 has been discontinued. The replacement FBQ2496 only offers 1 preset and still doesn't get us many of the...

            "Slot-loaded" sub designs?
            by SE-Raider
I've seen several "slot loaded" subs lately, or at least designs described as slot loaded. An example is the 8-inch offering from av123. Many of these designs are down firing, and a partition is placed a few inches away from the face of the sub, loading the front wave; an opening around the...

I currently have 803s up front and 804s for the rear, with a HTM1 center. My sub is crruntly a SVS 20-35PCI.

I have been working on my room setup. I now think my sub may be my "weak piece" that needs to be improved next. I am hoping this knowledagble grou pcan give some opinions....
