    HDMI Upconversion? is it 1080P?

A few thoughts and questions. I see many recievers that "upconvert to HDMI" but don't list any specs. Does that mean they send 1080P over the HDMI, or could it be something else? The next step is that I am looking at Onkyo's 805 and 875. Both upconvert, but the 875 says it uses HQV Reon for a 1080P signal. The 805 just says "Analog to HDMI Upconversion". So I am assuming the signal stays in whatever resolution in began in?
Next to Sherwood Newcastle. Their Model 872 states
"R-872 uses a Genesis Faroudja processor IC and can deinterlace and scale any of its video inputs, analog or digital, to 720p, 1080i or even 1080p and output them over HDMI."
So it WILL upconvert to 1080P for certain.
Does anyone know the if one chip is better than the other? Is the Faroujda as good as the HQV Reon?
So my questions are: 1)what exactly does HDMI upconversion signify?
2)is the Onkyo better than the SN?

Don't expect too much. There is only so much an algorithm can do to improve the looks of a low resolution image. It basically means that a scaler will produce a HDMI signal for the monitor so it does not do the conversion itself. I would look at these systems at a local dealer and compare on the same display.

If you have a good enough scaler in your equipment it actually does make a pretty impressive difference. Especially with things like animation and what not. We watched Bee Movie on my HTPC which is only on DVD right now and it looked darn close to what I'd expect the Blu-Ray to look. The HQV-Reon is a heck of a lot better then my video card too

From what I recall the HQV's are supposed to be the best right now.

HQV Realta, Anchor Bay's VRS and Gennum’s VXP™ technologies are the best.

Realta is a highly integrated advanced SOC that enables a new benchmark standard of video excellence called Hollywood Quality Video, or HQV™. Teranex‘s professional broadcast-quality video processing platform – with thousands of display signal processors - has been integrated into the Realta chip. Teranex’s software algorithms, which have been refined though over 100,000 hours of content verification and have a proven reputation for quality, have been ported to run on Realta.

"Anchor Bay's latest VRS (Video Reference Series) technology. An ABT102 chipset provides AutoCUE-C™, Progressive Cadence Detection™, and Precision De-interlacing™. An ABT1018 chip handles Precision Video Scaling™, frame rate conversion, aspect ratio control and video zooming. These technologies combine to generate a clearer, smoother, and true-to-life picture free of artifacts.

"Gennum VXP technology delivers unprecedented image quality Developed from its broadcast heritage, Gennum’s VXP technology contains robust algorithms that ensure outstanding image quality. The advanced color processing with 10 bits of precision means more than one billion colors are used for eye-catching, natural images and uncompromised video quality. At the heart of the technology is Gennum’s motion adaptive de-interlacing with dynamic directional interpolation, which removes jagged edges that can result from motion in HD and SD interlaced formats. Enabling the up or down scale of SD and HD formats, the programmable scaling engine ensures the proper enlargement and reduction of the images without any loss of quality. Coupled with advanced image enhancement algorithms in a low-power, low-latency architecture, Gennum’s solutions comprise the most advanced single-chip image processors on the market today.

Thanks Wettou. You don't have any info on the Genesis Faroudja processor IC do you? Do you think the HQV would blow it out of the water? Thanks.

I don't sorry but I think HQV Realta is probably the best thing out there:T
