Using a non-HDMI processor for DTS-HD and True-Dolby

Hi,

I've been looking at a number of bluray players and some have either 5.1 or 7.1 analog output along with onboard decoding of all the latest formats/codecs, if my proccessor/receiver has 5.1/7.1 analog inputs can I not just connect it via those to receive DTS-HD and True-Dolby?

As long as it decodes them internally and outputs them over 5.1/7.1 analog outputs.

True, just wondering if there would be a sound difference... if there is, it would be very minor I think.

Also 7 RCA's compared to upgrading your processor/receiver should be cheaper!

The Panasonic DMP-DB30 outputs to analog and the manual says:

This unit supports playback of DVD-Video discs in surround sound up to 5.1 channels.

When playing BD-Video, only LPCM or Dolby Digital Plus can be output as 7.1ch.

Either the Sony S550 or the Panny BD50 will be the most quickly available option to decode ALL the advanced audio codecs internally and output them via MCH analogue--they are on my (very) short list of players to consider.

I have not seen any Blueray player with analogue 7.1 output? Most likely at least LPCM would be required on the receiver? The quality would depend on the decoder in the player and hard to predict.

The Sony, if I'm not mistaken, has 7.1 analogue outputs. The receiver would not have to do anything different from what it does when sent an analogue signal from any other source (though I don't know what kind of bass management/time alignment settings will be available in either the Sony or the Panasonic--level settings are also important).

This would be my biggest concern. I know the analog outs on my XA2 leave a lot to be desired along these lines.
