Ok so I have a Lexicon DC-1 THX model (no DD or DTS), and I think its time to upgrade the pre/pro. I just moved into a new house and so I'm really trying to decide if I want to stay with seperates or sell all my seperates and go with a nice receiver. I don't feel like I need all the lateset and greatest decoding, but I feel like I'm really missing out with out at least the Dolby Digital. Any thoughts...

For greatest impact watching movie, you ARE missing out on quite a lot by not having at least Dolby Digital. Arguably, DTS adds a bit more impact on some soundtracks, so is also worth having and is ubiquitous in new equipment.
If all you want is to add Dolby Digital while maintaining fairly high quality sound reproduction, you have a lot of choices, including "pre-owned" pre/pros and mid-to-high end receivers, both "pre-owned" and new. The new gear is going to have DTS whether you want it or not. :>)
If you are not interested in the very latest audio decoding, then you may not be particularly excited about the latest video connectivity options either. In fact, depending on how much gear you have to connect, you may not even need to have video switching in your "main box" at all, which further simplifies the search.
On the other hand, if you want the convenience of one-button switching that covers both audio and video, you will want a unit that incorporates high quality video switching and perhaps upscaling of all video inputs to component so you only need one output to your display (rather than separate cable runs for S-video, composite and component.) HDMI is really cool, too, but requires a display that can accept it as an input, as well as a source that feeds it.
Of course, one factor you haven't mentioned is budget and that would have a significant influence on what direction you want to go with this.
Good luck,
Burke

why not just get a player that has multi-channel analog outputs? that way you could keep your pre/pro and use the decoding built into the player. nearly all players now-a-days have built in decoders for DD and DTS...chris- Bottom

That would be a fine strategy, assuming that a pre/pro old enough to be lacking Dolby Digital decoding would nevertheless have a multichannel analog input. (According to its owner manual, the Lexicon DC-1 THX model does not have a multichannel analog input.)

Yeah I dodn't think about analog inputs and let the player do the decoding. So something like this would get me where I need to be.

by Locutus2kHi,
i've already posted a message in the past days about the 1098 & DTS 96/24 decoding. Now, after many tests on diff'rent 1098 units, i can assume that there's a bug.
If you set the back surround channel to OFF, then ANY DTS 96/24 program (even if not ES) will be decoded as DTS 96/16...-

I noticed the micro-code for the Cirrus Logic CS49326 has been updated. (The CS49326 is the main chip inside rsp-1066 and rsx-1055).
According to the Application note rev7 dated march 2003, it now supports DTS 24/96 decoding...-

by TomekI just got the RSP-1098, and I am currently evaluating it. I've noticed that DTS 96/24 decoding seems to be a problem. The audio drops out about every second. I'm using high end Marantz DVD player (DV-12S1) with a good digital coax interconnect. Is anybody else experiencing this problem with the 10...-
