Down ported Sub lying on side?

I have the Energy S12.3 subwoofer,

and am having a problem with size. The sub is downward ported, driver forward. If I leave it standing up normal the subwoofer runs 3 inches into the screen. I was hoping I could lay the speaker on its side, as the side width would work fine. If I position the port against the wall where the screen is, it seems like it is essentially still a down ported sub. What would happen if I laid the speaker on its side, with the driver facing forward, and the port facing either left or right wall? Would it make the frequency response not as low? Any suggestions?

If I understand correctly, the driver will still be vertical, which is good as it may not be designed to be downfiring.

The port is going to get some reinforcement (additional volume at low frequencies) from the wall or floor, whichever it is close to.

Other than that, tip it on its side and crank it .

Like Paul said, you should be fine. Just to clarify one point - if the port is firing out into space instead of a wall or floor, your bass output will probably be a bit lower than you are used to with it firing into the floor. You'll need to adjust the volume and/or location accordingly.

Slot port k (end correction) factor question. Clarification needed.
        by dstmbgh
The speakers I'm building have a triangular port in the lower corner, i.e., the port shares two enclosure walls. However, they are monitors not subwoofers, and as such will be elevated on stands rather than be placed on the floor. My question is what k (end correction) value to use in calculating...

Hi, I'm finishing off my HT design and have come to a halt with my subwoofer. I'm running 7 Sonance cinema II lcr THX in-wall speakers powered by a Pioneer Elite VSX-26. I framed in and designed the entire basement room around the home theater for the last 18 months. I want to do an in-wall sub as...

        Port

A loudspeaker port, also known as a bass reflex port, vented enclosure, or ported enclosure, is a design feature used in loudspeakers and subwoofers to improve their low-frequency performance. It operates based on the principles of Helmholtz resonance. In a typical loudspeaker, when the speaker cone moves back and forth, it generates both front and rear sound waves. The front sound wave radiates into the room and produces the desired sound output, while the rear sound wave travels...

The Curse and Bane of the Rear Port
        by bluewizard
OK, maybe I exaggerated, it's not a curse or a bane, but it is certainly an annoyance.

Why would anyone use a rear port if they didn't have to? Is it just so you can hang out will all the cool speaker designers who are also using rear bass reflex ports?

        Here is an example...
