    Looking for a new reciever

I have a nice little system but looking to upgrade my reciever. I have a yamaha rx-v1 and it is nice but i have been looking at several reciever and the two that peak my interest has been the B&K 507 vs Marantz 9600. Was wondering what you guys think about the two units. I have Paradigms studio 100 v4 front cc690 center and adp590 for my four surround speakers. Any info would be very helpful.

    Thanks True_dreams

It would depends what kind of components you have. HDMI 1.3 recievers are coming out within a few months and if you have HDMI components, I would wait.

      Welcome to the Guide True_dreams!

I've never heard the Marantz. So I cannot comment on it's sound. I've heard the 507. I also own a Reference 50.

The B&K 507 (I'm told) is a Ref 50 w/amps. I really enjoy the sound of the unit. I always use THX post processing (when viewing film) with mine b/c I have THX speakers. And I'm more than happy with the results.

But when I auditioned the units, neither were with THX speakers. Thus, I didn't use any additional processing over straight DD,DTS or DPL II. And I still purchased the processor. I think the B&K's have a pretty even sound. Not in your face and not laid back.

I must add however, if it was I, I would wait a bit before purchasing an AVR or Pre/Pro. I know that Onkyo will be releasing a new AVR (in the next two or three wks) with all the up to date formats. As well as 1.3a HDMI. With a few others to follow shortly ther after. And the other MFG's will be releasing their units with the new formats very soon as well.

Hi TD, welcome to The Guide. :welcome:

Being a fellow RX-V1 owner, have you considered upgrading just the amps? Go to a pair of monoblocks, or a 2- or 3-channel amp? That way you don't have to compromise on a non-HDMI v1.3 unit, keep the processing capabilities of the RX-V1 and get better sound at the same time.

I mention this option simply because it's the one I'm looking at.

You could do that, or totally go into seperates. I'd suggest Emotiva, as they seem to be in your price range. Their units also have HDMI switchers available and standard.

            Hi

Is there anything missing from the sound you are getting from the rx-v1?

You may not need to upgrade anything at all. Do you have a subwoofer?

If you do, you should set all of your speakers at small, and let the sub handle the frequencies below 80Hz. Doing this will reduce the load on your receiver by 66%.

I am wondering how to get the best sound out of my CD system. If I plug my PS Audio Transport straight into the 507's coax DAC's do I get more information and better sound than buying a new stand-alone dac or by using my Sonic Frontiers SFD-1MKll. Should I just buy a new CD player? How good are the...

I have lived with this unit for six months now. Like most things in life, it has it's pros and cons. But, so far the pros have been winning the battle.

When I started looking a new receiver, I knew that THX was something that I wanted. I own a Pro-logic THX processor (which I moved to...

I'm new to this forum, and also a relatively new AVR-507 owner. Actually, I've just assembled a completely new system. So far, I love the sound, although the logic takes a bit of getting used to. Anyway, I've noted that the unit generates a fair amount of heat, especially when I'm enjoying music...
