    Receiver Upgrade Questions

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted. I hope this place is still the 'friendly HT hangout' it used to be

I'm finally ready to retire my Yami RX-V795 to garage duty and replace it with something more current. I've been reading a lot, trying to get a handle on all the new technologies that have come out the past few years. I really need some help in deciding what brand/model to go with.

My current equipment consists of the Yami RX-V795 receiver, a Sony Wega 36" XBR250 (non-HD) TV, a Toshiba SD-K860 DVD player, a TiVo Series II, and a non-HD Dish Network receiver.

For speakers, I have a pair of BIC America Venturi DV52Bs + a DV53CLR for the front stage, Sound Dynamics RTS-RS1s for the rears, and a home built Shiva Sonotube sub powered by an Adcom GFA-545.

It's been a while since I put this system together, and would like to start the progress of upgrading it. Eventually, I will replace the TV, TiVo, & Sat Receiver with HD models, but need to replace the receiver 1st, due to a bad buzz coming from the center channel.

I would like to get a receiver which will allow one video signal cable to go to my current TV (via component), and switch to a single HDMI when I upgrade the TV. I guess this means I want one which will do upconversion, right? I'd like to get a receiver which offers the best quality amps in my price range, which is ~$500. Bells & whistles are not very important (ie: DSP effects) to me, so if I can get a better quality unit by sacrificing them, I'd gladly do it.

The front runner in my decision right now is the Yamaha 5990, for a couple of reasons.
    • Strong amplifier section: 100+wpc
    • It has pre-outs for zone 2 & 3 (I'd like to use my old RX-V795 in the garage and have a feed coming from the new receiver)
    • It does upconversion to HDMI & component
    • The HDMI signal includes the video and audio signal

Are there any other receivers in this price range which provide the same functions as listed above? Maybe an Onkyo, HK or Denon unit?

    I appreciate any recommendations!

    Thanks,
    Thomas.

Other receivers I am considering are:
I like the price point of the HK, and have read it does all the things I am looking for. Only concern is the 50wpc rating; but I'm assuming HK rates their amplifiers more accurate than other manufactures.

Are there any other brands/models I am missing, which should be considered?

Any comments or assistance is greatly appreciated!
    Thomas.

      Thomas,

Don't worry we're still friendly here, we try to chase the bad guys away .

Are you sure you can't stretch your budget to the $700-$800 range? I think you can better suit your needs in that price range and probably not experience buyers remorse.

      Peace and blessings,

      Azeke

Thanks Azeke. If I were to increase my budget to the $700-$800 range, what would you suggest?

So far my list consists of the above receivers, and I've since added the Onkyo 674 and the Denon 887 (although I'm not sure the 887 will do everything I want) to consider.

Next upgrades will be the TV followed by speakers, so I want to make sure I get a receiver which will be scalable for future plans.

        Thomas.

          You're welcome Thomas.

Here are my personal recommendations, in this order:

          1) Outlaw 1070 (DVi outputs)
          2) Yamaha RX-V1700
          3) Denon avr-2807

You will need to listen if possible, because your choices will primarily depend on your personal preferences and your speaker setup. Also, be aware HDMI ver 1.3 is on the horizon. Just my quick thoughts, and of course, the disclaimer, your mileage may vary.

          Peace and blessings,

          Azeke

            Thanks for the suggestions.

I like the Outlaw receiver, except for the fact it uses DVi intead of HDMI. I wonder why they decided to integrate DVi into it? Maybe they made the decision before HDMI starting taking off .....

Isn't the Denon 2807 the same as the 987? Either way, I like that unit a lot, as it has all the features I'm looking for in a quality name, with plenty of wpc offered.

In researching the RX-v1700, I'm not finding anything which puts it over the Yamaha 5990. In your opinion, what makes the 1700 worth the extra $$ over the 5990?

            Thanks again,
            Thomas.

Here are some spec difference between 5990 vs 1700.

              1700 extras:
              XM HD Surround Sound
              Compressed Music Enhancer
              Simplay HD
              Made for iPod
              Neural Surround
              130W vs 120W
              HDMI v1.2a vs HDMI
Zone 2/3 terminal speakers vs Zone 2 only
              Surround programs 23 vs 17
              Zone Remote control
              IR ports
              Receiver Manager software

              Hope this helps.

              Peace and blessings,

              Azeke

                Hi

Please don't get involved with DVI. HDMI is the wave of the present as well as the wave of the future. The market has spoken.

I like Denon a lot, however Yamaha is a good choice. If I had to choose, I would go with Denon.

PS I seem to remember some issue with Yamaha and HDMI. I could be wrong.

                Best

Thanks for the replies, I ended up going with a Denon 987. I opted for the denon due to the features of the receiver, reputation of the brand, and eCost had a killer price on it when they had it in stock (which lasted about 2 hours!).

I ran through the auto setup yesterday (actually did it twice after reading tips on the Audyssey setup) and it sounds great! I didn't realize how poor of a job the old Yami 795 was doing until I heard "5th Element" through this Denon. I put it in just to test it out but it sounded so good, the wife and I watched it all the way through.

                  Next upgrade? New TV!

                  Thomas.

Thanks guys, I am very satisified with my decision. While watching 5th element the other night, my wife jumped, spun around on the couch and said "What was that? Did we leave the water on in the kitchen?!" I said "No, that was the rear speakers" LOL!

Even the non-HD signal from the dish network 301 receiver sounds 100% better. I suppose the Denon does a much better job with Dolby PL than the yamaha.

So now I'm looking for a TV, and so far have decided on an LCD. My entertainment center will allow for a 46", so I'm considering the Sharp 46D62U TV. Butterflyphoto seems to have a great price on it, but I'm still researching to make sure I make an informed decision.

                        Thanks again guys,
                        Thomas.
