Has anyone won a fight with Comcast?

I like to think of myself as a person who doesn't let much get under my skin, life is simply too short. Most of my friends tend to think that I take this attitude to a maddening degree. People that don't get pissed off have a tendency to piss off those that do. Oh well. That being said, why do I turn into a raving lunatic whenever I deal with Comcast? Is it because I always feel as if they have the upper hand in any negotiation and my options are far too limited? The ultimate response of taking my marbles and looking for another game just doesn't exist. Oh, would I love to call them, cancel my account, and then ask them to stop by the Wednesday after next, between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, to pick up their cable modem and DVR. Maybe it's because my Comcast bill has gone from $21.99 a month six years ago to $122.01 today. A plan never dies at Comcast, it just becomes a billing multiplier. My bill looks like a time line history of Comcast! In the beginning there was Limited Basic, then Expanded Basic, throw in high speed internet, now add Digital Plus and DVR/HDTV service. It drives me crazy! A new service never replaces and old service, it just becomes a new line, and charge, on my bill.
A few weeks ago they offered me their new phone service bubdled with my current services for 129.99 a month. The rate was guarranteed for two years if I'd sign a contract, and they would also throw in two years of HBO, Showtime and Starz. At $7.98 a month more than I'm paying now this sounded like a great deal. I was skeptical that $129.99 wasn't the true bottom line so I actually read the phone rep every line from my latest bill. Your offering me what I have now and adding unlimited phone service, HBO, Showtime and Starz for $129.99 a month? Yes, was his reply. No other charges? He said no. For two years? Yes , he said again. I asked him these same questions several time before I told him to sign me up.
Yesterday, they hooked up the new modem, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the high quality of the signal. I've heard mixed reviews from others with the service. The same day the contract came in the mail and this is when my raving lunatic started banging on his cage. The contract stated that the price was 129.99 (PLUS TAX AND FEES). The tax and fees concern was why I read the phone rep my current bill line by line. I was overly pointed about it, and had been as clear as possible that I wanted to know if there were any additional charges. So I'm back on the phone with Comcast. After a 20 minute discussion with the first person I talked with, it became painfully obvious that the phone reps are trained to apologize a lot for misunderstandings but are never ever allowed to adjust a bill. I asked for a manager and was put on hold for ten minutes until a recording came on and stated that, due to high call volume, no one was available to take my call, and instructed me to call later. REALLY?! It didn't even give me the option to continue holding, it just hung up. Oh Man! The raving lunatic escapes!
The second person I talked to claimed to be a supervisor, and also told me that my contract price of $129.99 not only didn't include tax and fees, it didn't include my DVR. She was also unable to tell me exactly what the fees were. I told her that I would have to be a moron to sign a contract without knowing the true bottom line. I knew she agreed with the moron part, but all she would do was apologize for the misunderstanding. I hung up. A little girl started to poke the raving lunatic in the nose with a stick.

I'm not calling the 800# again, I'd rather spend the day hitting myself with a hammer. On Monday, I'm going to call the Mid-Atlantic Corporate office.

Here are the questions I have for this forum:

Has anyone won a fight of this sort with comcast?

If so, what level on the Corporate chain did you need to climb?

Does their tune change once you tell them to cancel your service?

Does anyone have Verizons fiber optic service? how does it compair?

Verizon isn't in my area yet but is due soon. I assume that is why Comcast is pushing two year contracts. At $129.99 a month I'd be happy to commit to a two year contract, then renegotiate once Verizon, and hopefully others, are offering serious competition. I've got 30 days to decide. Perhaps I'll use it for the month and if they don't live up to the 129.99 a month verbal sale, I'll simply tell them to come get the phone modem and wait for Verizon. Thanks for letting me vent, I'm just tired of being nickeled and dimed at a fairly constant rate by Comcast.

I wonder if Comcast and Rogers are one in the same.

Like clockwork, my bill is screwed up every three months. I call and get it fixed but it always takes a good 30 minutes on the phone with them. :M

I would have canceled long ago, but I own my cable modem and HD-PVR. I got great deals on both from a third-party. Maybe I will see if I can sell them.

I feel your pain; the problem is they has us by the balls. There aren't a lot of options out there and they know it. They also know people don't like to switch providers because it is inconvenient.

I have Verizon FIOS internet, and it beat Cox handsdown, I have 30/5 consistently based on BB speedtest and this does not vary depending on time. Get rid of Comcast as soon as Verizon FIOS is available, you won't regret it. Just my quick thoughts.

      Peace and blessings,

I moved to Tampa for my wifes job. We rented a brand new townhome for a year because we didn't have time to apartment hunt. These townhomes have a contract with a private company to provide internet access. Never move into a place that does this. I think the reasons are obvious. Impossible support, no techs near you to come out and look, etc.

We are buying a house now that the year lease is almost up. I told the Realtor that I'll only buy a house that has, or can get FiOS. My wife was like whatever. I told her I was serious. I won't buy a house unless I can get fiber. So in a month and a half, I'll be free.

Not to hijack, but had to brag. I've had Comcast here and there in my past, but I can't say I had too many problems really. I lived in Lansing, MI and had great service, was only down for a few hours twice in the three years I lived there. I never had their cable service because I hate TV. Though they did rase the rates from $45 dollars to $60 on me. They would give you internet at $45 if you paid $15 more for basic cable. I wrote to the attorney general and claimed blackmail. Comcast came back and said it's a multiline discount. I guess their somewhat right, my insurance company does the same thing.

With FiOS, I am only getting data. If I get TV, it's going to be through FTA satellite.

If it makes you feel any better, I am currently receiving Comcast Hi Speed Internet for 1/2 price for a full year because of their service. I had to go to the 'Presidents Office' in Philadelphia (215-665-1700 Sheila Hopkins, Alisha Wade, or Tiffany Gaskins) who then put me in touch with the local customer elevated service department. After that problem was resolved I received a year of access for $24.95 /month.

I just finished a trouble problem with loss of service and slow speed that I started on December 31, 2006. I have just received credit to my bill for 2 months of service at no charge.

When the next service issue arises and they screw that up, I am going to ask them to start paying me!

Herb, I understand you have to get through to corp. offices and they will help call the number chuck provided. Me personally I dumped them as soon as my wife said i'm tired of Comcasts crap we had the fast internet, hi def, on demand all the goodies, but disliked their quality of service. I now have local dsl for 19 bucs a month (plenty fast)from AT&T they have more speeds to chose from and my television broadcast from Dish Network no comparison Dish lite years away from Comcast I have over 30 HD channels with the gold package with a HD-DVR leased with three other boxes being leased one of those being a HD Box for 90$ a month. Even my wife noticed the difference in picture quality. I will never go back to Comcast or cable. I do have to admit dish has their share of issues just not on the same level as Comcast and Dish is pretty much straight forward they say what they mean great customer service. The San Francisco bay area is covered by Comcast and people like the service, but its usually those that have not tried anything else they just don't know, but I know your heartache Herb when Verizon comes jump on it. Good Luck

I had satellite service in S. Carolina and will never waste my money on it again. Nothing worse than having to get up in the middle of a Steelers game and go brush the snow off the dish so I can watch the second half of the game. Thunderstorms were a constant interruption of service as well.
I now have Time-Warner cable and am pretty satisfied. I get digital cable , hi-def package,VOiP phone service, and RoadRunner high speed internet for a total of $117.00 a month. I was paying AT&T $70.00 a month for fewer phone services alone. Seems to be a pretty good deal for me.

                Alaric,

Different kind of weather here no snow, hardly ever a thunder storm and difference in picture quality cable can't touch satellite at least not yet. When cable is totally fiber-optic then I might give them a second chance, but for now sat works for me.

Absolutely dependent on locale! I'm also using budget as a major factor in my decision. Also , I have to figure picture resolution in my choice. 1080i on a CRT RPTV. With a better display I would probably have to look at my situation differently. My digital channels are limited (100 to 149) as are my hi-def (706 to 799). Satellite offers all digital signal. Given my what-I-can-get:what-I-can-use ratio I'm pretty happy.

Probably a short term effect , if any! I actually had to climb a tree to clear off the dish. Decided my rate for climbing frozen trees exceeded how many duckets I'd part with to avoid said activity. We makes our choices.....

I know that's right :T . I currently have D*TV, and I had my dish mounted where I can brush it off with a broom when necessary. This year we haven't had too much snow to worry about, but there is a storm coming Tuesday. Hopefully, I won't have to come outside too often.

Since I have Verizon Fios, I am contemplating Fios TV, but Verizon is still working out the bugs on their TV equipment. I presently have a lot of invested D*TV equipment that I own (prior to the leasing options). Verizon Fios has impeccable PQ though, superior to D*TV at least for now, but D*TV is preparing to launch their new sats, so only time will tell.

                        Peace and blessings,

A note about dishes/directv. The newer elliptical dish required for HD is much more robust and reliable than the old round dish. I cannot remember my last outage. Oh, in the absolute heaviest of storms, you may loose a little, but it's not very often.

Comcast, well, the wheels of corporat america and beyond grind slowly...

Ineed Lex, the Slimline Dish, it has only one 5lnb, as opposed to two separate LNB's with the older dish. I tried to have an installer put one in, but he said they have to run out of inventory on the older dish first.

I ditched Time Warner for more or less the same reasons plus all the aggravation of getting a service tech whenever my signal would die for days on end... which was every other month or so it seemed. Finally made the switch from cable to dsl and though it's ever so slightly slower on the connection, it's been flawless otherwise. Found that with dealing with Time Warner, the phone wouldn't get results and that I'd get really quick results when going to the local office and confronting the service supervisor face to face.
