Bit the bullet and bought a used Krell

I just bought a used Krell Showcase 5. On the rest of my system I'm using high end MIT cables. What quality of cable do i need to use between my Pre-amp out connections and the input connections on the Showcase? Does cable quality matter being that it is a low level signal?

    Thanks!

    HI myohde,
Welcome. Since you are new here, I will fill you in on the facts of life.

Cable oriented posts seem to have an unfailing tendency to burst into flame wars. Our moderators strongly discourage the strong words but the threads take on a life of their own. Thus, they get shut down.

I will answer your question but I guarantee you will get strong opposing opinions.

Yes, in my view (and ears) the low level signals benefit from a symbiotic cable selection. All signals do.

    Now duck!!!

(putting on Administrator hat.) Okay, EVERYONE play nice! Or else! (taking off hat.)

I believe that cables make a difference, especially when you move up into a class of components like Krell. Personally, I like silver interconnects for the added clarity they provide. Our primary forum sponsor is CATCables and they offer a couple of lines of very nice silver cables you should look at:

      the SilverCat which is un-shielded
      the KingCat which is shielded

FWIW, I've been using the SilverCats almost exclusively for over 4 years now and have absolutely no complaints.

I used Audioquest King cobra I/C between my pre/pro and amps.
They are a good quality copper i/c's. Rather than purchasing additional king cobra's I purchased some CAT Cables, Kingcats series. I had been wanting silver in my system and Kingcats were reasonabley priced and I've read much good press.

The music now sounds more alive. It certainly brightened the midrange and treble. The subtle effects from guitars are more present, etc, etc.

One, I see no reason to go back to copper given the level of my system. Two, Kingcats price range is very good when compared to other silver. Three, January has Kingcats on sale.

Because your Krell is new to your system, you may yet to fully understand what silver will do. Try out one pair.
I'm certain you will not send them back.

        Good luck

Thanks, guys I'll try the Cat's since they are our sponsor. And i will try to steer clear of starting any cable threads in the future.

          I appreciate everyones input,

I ordered the KingCats. I'm very impressed at 4:00 on a Sat. afternoon they actually answered the phone and spent all the time needed with me to make the selection. Very nice guy.

That was Doug (forum name Lex) the forum owner.

Don't worry about starting cable threads. It's an integral part of our hobby/obsession and open/pleasant discussion is a good thing. We just have some people that don't discuss things - they browbeat and make things uncomfortable until we step in.

                New upgrade to the Theatre,
Well, the Krell arrived yesterday. I set it up today using really cheap cables (waiting for my KingCats to arrive) and using my Sony ES receiver as the pre-amp.
I threw on my favorite DTS disc, Santana Abraxas and WOW what a difference! My B&W's have never sounded so good. Particularly the DS8S side surrounds. All speakers have more low end than they have revealed in the past. The top end sounds good and mid is very smooth.

                one more surprise:
I bought this amp from a dealer on the net as a pre-owned amp. As I was unpacking it a seemed that the amp box had never been opened. The box was or appeared to be factory sealed and the documents bag was still sealed as well. I called Krell, gave them the serial number asked if the very helpful gentleman could tell me how old this Showcase 5 was. To my shock it was manufactured in June of 06! So, I'm feeling pretty good about that considering the price I paid (still a considerable sum of $$ but way less than new $$).

Next will most likely be a Pre/Pro but I might wait for the HDMI thing to settle a bit.

Can anyone tell me if Krell amps improve/change after a burn in period?

                Thanks,

I think i might spend the money on a used truck though

Krell will more then likely be my next upgrade :T Congrats on the purchase

                    Thanks,
Congratulations on your new Krell purchase. Usually new components require a burn-in period, and I am pretty sure your Krell is no exception. I would probably just stick in a CD and let it run a few days, monitoring closely of course.

The information previously mentioned is purely subjective, and of course your audio felicity may vary .

                    Peace and blessings,

                    Azeke

To some that may seem like a presumptious title, but after spending about an hour now with the 1077 running 2 channel, it may be closer to the truth than many can imagine. The 1077 has real b---s and one doesn't need a wheelbarrow to cart it around either! While real critical listening will have to...

My shortlist consisted of 3 processors:

Hey guy, I am in the process of upgrading my processor (rsp-1066). Initially I was going to purchase the 1098 but taking a trip to my local dealer had my inpulses halted upon listening to Krell. Granted, I can't afford new krell or anything above krell's entry level (Kav).

                        I can pick...

Hey, thanks to coming here you folks have pulled me over to the DARK SIDE of separates.

I bought the Krell Showcase 5 (two weeks ago) and with my speakers (as some have predicted) the system is pretty bright particularly at high volumes. Could we really expect anything different for a...

Anybody seen or read up on the new Krell Showcase pre-processor and amplifier? Looks to be a real competitor coming in at 4K for the pre-pro fully decked out with balanced inputs and outputs. Of course, the normal plethora of sound processing is standard, RS-232 for software updates, stainless front,...
