That is utterly ridiculous, seems like rhetoric to me.

I bet you he has a HT in his house.

    Peace and blessings,

The crazy part of the article is this bit:

The bill would require that any hardware manufactured in the future contain technology that tells the MPAA directly of what is being shown and specific details on the audience. The data would be gathered using various motion sensors and biometric technology.

It's crazy because they can already get this information from the chips implanted in our heads.

Isn't it just typical of the government to spend our money unnecessarily?

Y'ever get the feeling that so-called 'whacko conspiracy theorists' might actually be right.... or at the very least onto something!?!

You would think that they would have better things than lobbying to do with THEIR money....like make movies perhaps? NAhhh.that would be win-win, they want win-lose!

It's a joke guys. Look at some of the other articles on the site, such as "MPAA to Thwart Pirates By Making All Movies Suck", and "Sony Unveils New Self-Destructive DVD Player".

Looks like they found an uncrackable HD DVD format too: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/04/unbreakable-drm.html

So if I charge the same admission as current prices to see a movie, throw in a couple beverages and a bag of popcorn, after a few shows you could almost supplement any upgrades to your system !! Oh yeah, and the strict rules would be, no touching any equipment, you are not allowed any volume control, and you have to sit on the floor, you only have 2 choices for beverages, water and warm water, as spillage in the HT room is unacceptable !! MPAA, bring her on !!

"We didn't act early enough with the online sharing of our copyrighted content. This time we're not making the same mistake. We have a right to know what's showing in a theater."
Hey!... No problem for me I don't have a "Home Theater", I just have an A/V room with a really big screen projection system for my 35mm slides and "home movies" (the fact that it could potentially be used to show MPAA movies is completely concidental)..... :B

These morons really need to get a life. This is like the original "you can't copy a video tape for your own use" nonsense. As soon as they try to make and enforce a rule like that the courts will blow them away.

That satirical article is a response to lawsuits filed against certain web sites recently who host or promote the sharing of movie content between its members, it is meant as a joke. Seriously, a bill like that would be shot down in a heartbeat.

Oh! I knew 'The Onion' was a spoof site since I read their 'newspaper'. I didn't know about the other one.

IMO the MPAA people are actually dumb enough to try something like that at some point in the future...

Here is one for you...., here recently they convinced a few theatre chains to hand out two way radios to participating movie patrons to report anyone trying to record movies with a camcorder to the manager, the theatres actually took it a step further and ask the "Cine-Narcs" to report anyone that disrupts the movie.

Traffic congestion, trying to find parking, lines for tickets, loud people, cellphones/pagers, sticky floors, bad sound, uncomfortable seats, expensive and terrible tasting food....

These are a few of the reasons why I don't go to the 'movies', unless it's something outrageous like IMAX.

"The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29" with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon. Anyone with a home theater would need to pay a $50 registration fee with the MPAA or face fines up to $500,000 per movie shown."
my television doesn't have stereo (ae-900) but my receiver does, so I'm set.

On a less serious note, consumer ID (RFid) tags pose a similar threat for spamming you in a public place, I see no reason why mfg's would not include reporting devices into A/V gear at home given the upcoming market that could emerge from this technology.
