connecting pioneer vsx-74txvi and pioneer headphones se-dir800c

Hi, I purchased a 50 inch pioneer elite plasma television, an a/v receiver vsx-74txvi and the wireless headphones SE-DIR800C. I also purchased a digital optical cable.
I am unable to get the headphones to work through the optical output of the receiver.
I am sure that I am doing something wrong but don't know how to fix the problem.

make sure you turned the receiver's optical out on. Most of them left it as off in default setting
