Problem connecting Phillips HTS3500S to Sky+HD via convertor

    Hi

I got Sky installed at the weekend and have attempted to connect it to my older http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HTS3...pr_product_top which doesn't have an optical or hdmi input.

Knowing that Sky+HD only outputs Dolby 5.1 via an optical lead I bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...F8&me=&seller= and used an optical to link the converter to the Sky box and coaxial leads to go into the amp.

Now when the Sky box is set to output 'Dolby' through the optical lead, I get no sound at all, however when it is set to 'normal' I get sound but very faintly and not through all speakers.

When connected by just the coax leads without the converter it outputs simulated 5.1 fine. can anyone give me any advice on how to get the 5.1 working??

I'm leaning towards there being a fault with the optical or converter thus far but could do with some advice.

    Hi Marc, welcome to HTGuide.

The "adapter" you purchased is a stereo DAC, not an optical to coaxial converter. Therefore, it won't work for converting your digital signal for surround on your system. If you look on Amazon, they have an Ex-Pro unit that looks like it would do the job here: Optical to Coax Converter

It's a lot less expensive than what you bought too.

      Digital throughput on 1066

I hope I can explain this clearly:

I have acquired a DAC for my hifi which I want to use for my stereo music listening as it provides higher quality replay than the 1066. I will connect my source to the DAC digitaly, then connect the lineouts of the DAC to the 1066 (in effect just using...

Regarding the quality of optical digital transmissions

Previously on this forum there was a discussion regarding optical vs. coaxial digital interconnects. I personally favor optical for the isolation factor, but there was some discussion as to whether cheap optical receivers/transmitters could cause errors.

I had the pleasure this last week...

HDMI Switcher with Optical/Coax audio extraction

I'm looking at getting a Roku 2 media streamer to play our mkv and flac files off our NAS (via Plex) but my older Rotel pre/pro does not support HDMI. So I'm looking at purchasing an HDMI switch that has optical/coax audio extraction to send audio to the Rotel and the video over HDMI to the TV. Gaining...

I have a Gateway P-6860FX laptop with an mini-optical out that is connected to my Classe SSP-600 to listen to my MP3 files. This is not for serious listening but I'm wondering if there would be any type of improvement if I purchased an external USB DAC? Nothing expensive; maybe in the $100-300 dollar...

Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray Player BDP-05FD - Blu-Ray side worth Fixing?

      Hello Everyone,
I have a Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD Blu Ray player and the Blu-Ray portion of it is not working. It still plays audio CDs and regular DVDs. The reason why I love this machine is that it has RCA audio outs for my system so I know I am getting the best possible audio (meaning I don't...
