    Speaker Magnet Interference

I know unshielded speaker magnets can interfere with CRTs but can they interfere with Surround Receivers and DVD players that are placed in a rack within .5 meters of my main speakers? I know they can hurt cds and DVDs placed near so how about DVD players or does the aluminum case shield the player? Sorry if this is a newb question but the shoe fits in my case ops: Russ

Russ, where did you hear that a speaker magnet can harm a CD or DVD? These aren't magnetically-based media - as opposed to something like a cassette tape or hard-drive in a PC.

I cant give to a Yes or No answers that would be 100% true

But I have my DVD play right next to a unshelied speaker and have no problem with interferance so It might be something else or I could be special.

Thanks Guys- No I can't remember where I heard that tale about CDs and DVDs. I've been trying to absorb so much info over the past 4 mos. as I purchased my first home theater that it might be my over active imagination ops: . But you say it will effect my XBox if I place it in an equipment rack next to my mains. Thats good to know. I'll be sure to avoid that move :T . Russ

Sonic vibration is a form of interference. This applies to any mechanical record playback device thats on or close to large speakers.

David- Ya I found it. In my owners manual for my B&W speakers it says under stray magnetic fields-"keep magnetically sensitive articles (television and computer screens, computer discs, audio and video tapes, swipe cards...at least 0.5 meters from the speakers". So I guess when they say "computer discs" they mean computer hard disks and not the DVDs and CDs I use in my computer. Thanks. I would have been worrying about keeping my "discs" away from my speakers for years! Its a British spelling difference. Here in North America we call DVDs and CDs discs and computer hard drives "disks"not discs like the Brits. Russ

They also probably meant floppies. It's an old warning. They think computer screens are CRT's.

                Dear All,

I am having a big problem with interference while watching DVD on my Toshiba 50" rear projection TV. The interference consists of scrolling diagonal lines sometimes fast and sometimes slow. The direction (from to to bottom and from bottom to top) varies as well.

Here's my "new" DVD player, the Samsung DVD-HD1000.

This DVD player was really a surprise. I'd not heard of it, until accidentally finding one used on the net. Not knowing what it was, I went to the Samsung site to research it. What I saw was a beautiful player, that exuded...
