    Review samsung DVD-HD1000

Here's my "new" DVD player, the Samsung DVD-HD1000.

This DVD player was really a surprise. I'd not heard of it, until accidentally finding one used on the net. Not knowing what it was, I went to the Samsung site to research it. What I saw was a beautiful player, that exuded quality from top to bottom. It looked to have the "right stuff" for a quality video experience from start to finish.

I wasn't sure about buying from someone with zero feedback though, so I went on to ebay and searched on the player. What do you know, I found one. The guy had feedback that looked ok, so I went for it. It was advertised as having the mod performed that allowed 1080i conversion, I presume all the time. as the description below states, typically a flicker will occur for copyrighted material. I've never had mine flicker.

Installing the player wasn't easy at 40 pounds. But hey, with 100+ pound amps, I've handled worse. Once in the rack, I flipped it to 1080i on the back (dip switch), and began setting it up.

The player has DVD Audio capability, but I found immediately, with the DVD Audio turned on, it increased the time spent seeking on a disc before it plays. that's a negative. But since I am not currently connected with 5.1 analog anyway, and don't own a DVD Audio disc yet, I just turned it off, and it decreased the amount of time spent seeking to figure out what it was playing.

The player has a main standby button, that you can press to turn all the way off. What I haven't found is a way to go to "standby" without using the remote. You can turn it all the way off at the unit, but not to standby that I have found.

To turn it on from standby, just press a button, be it open, or play, or perhaps any other button.

The open door is a little slow to open, maybe 5 or 6 seconds. Of course, it's a drop down front, so I guess it's preparing to open the assembly, thinking about what it needs to do. Maybe it's just confused. :?

Door closure upon putting a disc in, is fairly smooth. I noticed right off when removing a disc, there's no real "grab groove" to pick up the edges. You pretty much just have to stick your finger in the hole of the disc and pull up. That's pretty much a major oversight, not having the edge for grabbing. But maybe they were concerned about drawer stability, and didn't want to risk having any movement in the tray.

The LED display is a cool blue green, very easy on the eyes and easy to read. It has a disc indicating motion when playing, similar to the Sony S7000 had. The DVD logo "frame" in the center of the unit above the glass lights up blue, I mean very blue. sort of strange.

The menu systems are quite good, and easy to operate. Brightness, Color, Contrast and other picture quality controls. You've got a picture overlay menu for the display changes. Then if the player is stopped, your in the main control menu.

Where this player really shines is in the image quality. the keyword is smooth, very smooth. Excellent detail and clarity. Near 3 dimensional with excellent sillouette imagery against the backgrounds. No jaggies at all even on my budget projector. But put it on the 2HD (Z2), and oh wow, are you in for a treat. I love this player for it's video quality, and that alone overcomes all negatives I mentioned previously. It's about pluses and minuses, and for this one, the pluses outweight the negatives by a long shot.

That's a Samsung DVD-HD1000 DVD player, reputed to upconvert 480P DVD to 1080i or 720P! However, there is a catch. DVDs that are copy protected will cause the screen to flicker, then it's converted back to 480P. I do understand there's a mod for this, that I assume would make it upconvert to 1080i or 720P any DVD.

Player retail is 1500-2000. Construction looks to be bulletproof.

Quoting one store that's taking pre-orders only:

    Samsung DVD-HD1000 HD DVD Player

Samsung Electronics invested heavily in this masterpiece. Technical cooperation was pursued with both US and Japanese partners to improve the fidelity of the audio produced by the DVD-HD1000 DVD player, and overseas audio specialists were repeatedly brought in to evaluate and improve the product.

The DVD-HD1000 targets audiophiles and is designed to reproduce the world’s best audio and video quality. It comes equipped with a Shannon & Fluency filter, produced in a technical tie-up between Samsung Electronics and Luxman, to deliver sound quality as close to the original as possible. A liner “O“-core transformer reduces noise generated by the power source to offer even better overall sound quality

Moreover, the product is carefully structured to eliminate distortion, resonance, vibration and interference, thereby providing the world’s very best audio performance. It is designed for DVD audio, which is four times better sound quality than compact disc. As such, this product targets professional users and produces the very highest and lowest notes in high fidelity. The exterior is finished with aluminum to enhance its image as one of the best DVD players available on the market today.
Importantly, the DVD Player is equipped to accommodate HDTV, offering higher quality video imagers than regular DVD players do. It retails for W3 million as the ideal product for digital TV owners who want to build a high-end home theater around their DVD player.

Samsung Electronics plans to aggressively market its new DVD player through large retail outlets. The company’s priority on quality is aimed at positioning its DVD player line at the very top of the market.

    HD Output DVD - 720p, 1080i
Incredibly, the quality of the output achieved is more vivid than the source.
Using a 480i source in the DVD, it outputs 720p, 1080i quality at the HDTV level.

*Notice: If playing a copy-protected DVD, 720p output or 1080i output is automatically converted to 480p output. Picture flickering may occur for 1~2 seconds during the shifting process.

    Premium Audio Performance
Using the Noise Filter, and the best and most advanced DAC,
the DVD-HD1000 offers the very best in sound quality!
The BMC Insulator and FB Chassis prevent even the smallest of mechanical disturbances.

Yup, that's a very nice player, Lex. One wonders whether the mod would be hardware or software....

OTOH, one way to play DVD's upscaled in a player which looks for CSS is to remaster the DVD, removing unnecessary streams and material, just leaving in the desired movie and audio stream, and of course, stripping CSS. Not something you might want to do on a regular basis, but for special movies, it's not that time consuming, particularly if you have an extra PC around. I use either my HTPC or desktop for those kinds of tasks while I'm doing household chores...

Happy to see you're enjoying the picture from this awesome looking machine

I think you'd be better off setting the player to 720p for your 2HD projector though as it's native resolution is the perfect 1280x720. That means your projector won't have to resample the image from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 to display it. That should = a better picture.

Good review Lex! Glad it's makin' ya happy too! Sounds like it has a really good pic. I guess it only comes in the silver/black combo color. I'd want all black.

Uh... would you mind pickin' up a Denon 5900 and comparing them side by side and let us know which one you like the best with the 2HD?

Jon, thanks. I'd like to try that sometime. I leave my PC on most of the time anyway, so processing while away is no problem.

Jason, you asked for a review, so I didn t' want to disappoint. I've tried both settings. It's honestly difficult to see a difference, so I settled on 1080i. I'll try 720P for a while though, see if I feel it makes a difference.

Sonnie, sure, I'll just go out to the store right now and pick one up for comparison. I know what you mean on black. That battle gets harder and harder to win, so I gave up. I've tried to position my ligher color components together as a group so the visual statement is a little better than a silver here, a black there. but given my choice, black is good. However, the stainless front on the MC-12 is very nice.

It's sort of ironic, since I Started out with stainless front components in my first true hi-fi system close to 30 years ago! I just realized, those damn things are antiques now. My how time flies.

            Hi Lex

            JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUS !!!

That thing is retarded big...I am very surprised that Samsung would spend time money and energy on this since they sell about a gazillion players at 89.99$

How do audiophiles rate Samsung since they do make cheap players and then go all the way up it seems...Until today I would have never thought of buying a high end Samsung...except for their DLP screen ofcourse...

            Anyway enough rambling....

            Salut la !!!

Bam, as an audiophile, I rate the player very well, and truly, that is all that matters to me. Several companies build cheap players that also build better, Pioneer comes to mind. Elite is a fine product. This player was obviously built from the ground up by Samsung. There's no leftover cheapness from any of their cheap players in this baby. I've got one of their cheap ones too, so I know about that.

Retarted big? Well, it is dang near as big as my MC-12, so yea, it's large. But it's also GOOD. For me, compact size isn't really a concern up to a point. I mean look at that monstrous 336 amp I have.

I ran into this thread from a Google search (looking for info on this player) and I hope you don't mind me bumping this old thread up. Do any of you guys still use this player? Have you found any PQ issues? Anyone know what mpeg decoder is used and does it have CUE? Lastly are there any region-free mods/hacks for this player? Thanks.
