Digital-to-Analog Converter. It's a device that converts a digital audio bitstream (from a CD or DVD, etc.) into an analog audio signal that your amplifier will accept.

Digital audio devices (CD, DVD, iPod, PC soundcards etc.) have DACs built in, as do HT receivers with digital inputs. Some DACs are higher quality than others, which is why using a digital connection may sound better or worse than an analog connection depending on your gear. You can get external DAC boxes as well, to upgrade the sound quality of your CD player.

SQ difference between digital and analog outputs

I just purchased a squeezebox and was comparing the unit's DAC against the DAC inside my receiver (connected via digital coax).

At the same volume level I noticed that the mids and highs sound clear using the analog outputs but the bass is lacking. The digital output has slightly lesser...

I have noticed that when I play a cd via digital input(but in the Direct Mode) most lead vocals are dead center 99% of the time. However, when I play my turntable, the lead vocals seem to be off center quite often. Is there a valid reason for this? Has anyone else had a similar digital vs analog situation...
