    New member need advice

I have a friend who owned a stereo store back in ninty one.
While helping him clean out his old off site storage room. We came across an
    Onkyo A/V receiver. It's an Interga TX-SV909pro.
Is this a good receiver to build a home theater system with?
It's brand new in the box, never even been opened and he'll let me have it for ten bucks or so. I can't really find anything on the internet about this model.
So I don't know if I'd just be wasting my time or not.

    Any help or advice?

    Thanks

What inputs does it have? I guess at the end of the day you'll have to try it and blind test with something else.... Still it *is* fairly old so don't expect any of the funkier features available with current receivers such as auto setup and multiple zones (maybe you'll get lucky)..

'Quality' of output - well your ears will have to test that. Best thing is to have 'a setup' and swap the receiver with something else. You could maybe take it to a hifi store and ask them if they'd let you perform a blind test. Of course just hope that you don't damage any of their stuff and they will probably charge you.

    Good luck :T

For 10 bucks, I would certainly use it for a secondary system, but not for my primary. As previously stated, it probably lacks the latest technologies, Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS, etc., but back then, receivers were built like tanks. Take it for a test spin.

      Best regards,

Well it's built like a tank alright. it weights like 70 lbs!
It has Dolby Pro Logic and a few other effects theater, hall, concert etc.
It also has one called Ambiasonic that's kind of interesting.
The video connections are s-video, so I might not use it for video switching.
Did I say it was heavy? I'm scared to put it up off the ground!
It's also the best ( and loudest) 2 channel stereo i've ever heard, but that's not saying much as I'm no expert.

          I have one

I have a tx sv909pro. Its 48 pounds. Built around 1993. Its only pro logic, it has a lot of analog inputs and one optical input. It's a seven channel amplifier throwing out 110 watts in the front and center and 30 watts on four surround channels on 8 ohms. I have some materials that i can share if you want. Please share the info on the manual if you can. Thanks.

If your not interested I'll take it off your hands. Box and all. I'll offer you 20 bucks for it.

Hmmmm... this thread is 2 years old, so I doubt he's still debating whether to use it.

Blind testing (re: AC cord thread)

There's really no way to know whether your pre-concieved notion of how you think it'll sound affects your judgement unless you do a blind test. I sat in on a cable test one time (speaker cables, not power cables) and listened to everyone around the room proclaim the great differences between each cable...

Normally a thread like this should be in the Home Theater area, but JonW and I felt it should be posted here, as the members who participate on this DIY board have the true interest in the hobby, maturity, and willingness to help we are looking for. We have been planning to conduct a blind processor...

                Howzit guys,

I'm looking for a (budget) 42" plasma monitor as our main display for watching tv and dvd's, but can't seem to find any good sites for reviews and info.

There aren't too many dealers around locally to chat or check out the wares, so I guess I'll have to...

                Oppo BP83SE and Blind Testing
                by Johnloudb
The March issue of Stereophile showed up yesterday, and inside was the review of the Oppo BDP83SE, in the Music in the Round column. Kal, The Man, did a blind test comparing the analog audio outputs of the Oppo BDP83SE and Oppo BDP83. Way to go Kal! :T

Well, I know I appreciated it....

After reading posts and reviews here for the last month or so I have been able to put together the following system with some new and some used equipment in mint condition. Having little experience in AV equipment at this level I felt it would be wise to start out in this manner to gain some actual...
