Thanks for the post- I was more familiar with this genre back in the early 70's, but of late have just "re-entered" it a bit because of Alison Krause and Union Station. Their hybrid SACD's have really fabulous sounding CD layers, too! Rounder records has a number of unique artists.

Hey, Bam, Bluegrass is a different brand of Country Music than the norm. Think Ricky Skaggs, Krause, Bill Monroe, etc. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but those who like it, like it a lot.

And, don't forget the best non-bluegrass bluegrass group, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. What I mean is that although Bela can belt out pure bluegrass and does play the banjo, the group goes into a lot of jazz and even classical.

Wish I could listen to my Telluride Festival music, but my 11 year old daughter has stolen it, along with my Alison Krauss. She says she has to memorize each song before I get them back.

One final note: the best way to hear bluegrass is live. Just kind of makes you happy sitting with a bunch of other people with big grins on their faces.

Bellafleck and the Flecktones is one I've got to research, also Telluride is one disc that can get you involved with the preformers.I've yet to see a festival
live but hope to do so this summer.

Don't forget Tony Rice. This guy is probably the greatest "unknown" guitarist you'll ever come across. What a talent!

                Another bluegrass treat

Also you might want to give a spin to "The Three Pickers" featuring Ricky Skaggs, Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs -- all bluegrass super stars, showing why on this album.

For those of us who just can't listen to bluegrass these days unless Alison Krauss is involved, :>) she makes a guest appearance on this album too. You'll probably find something else you enjoy here in addition to her numbers, but she is definitely the best looking of the bunch. :>) For more info, check out the Amazon listing.

"Three Pickers" looks interesting. Is that Ryman Hall on the cover? Can it be found on vinyl. Personally, I love bluegrass, especially Doc Watson.

Bam, had you been from Tennessee, you wouldn't have to ask that question.

"The Three Pickers" concert was recorded at R.J. Reynolds Auditorium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. More info about the concert.

Rounder Records does offer some of its titles on vinyl, but I haven't seen any information about this album being available in that format. As far as I've been able to determine, it has been released on DVD (Rounder DVROUN0526) and CD (Rounder CDROUN0526). So far, I've only listened to the CD.

Thanks to everyone for the response on this thread, I,ve got my pad and pencil out writing down the recomendations. Bluegrass is the type of music
that gets me involved with what the artists are trying to comunicate. Its a
                        great style of music!!!

For any of you SACD types, got Nickel Creek's self-titled debut album on SACD a couple of weeks ago. One of the nicest 5.1 audio mixes I've heard yet. They went for sort of a widened soundstage effect, not a real immersive surround thing. My favorite of the dozen or so 5.1 music mixes I've heard so...

After a long hiatus, it looks like Nickel Creek is reuniting for a new album. Audiophiles will remember at least two other Nickel Creek discs which were reference quality, and available on multichannel SACD. This is one of the somewhat-rare combinations of also being REALLY good...

I went up to Talkeetna, Alaska Sunday night for a bluegrass concert, kind of on a whim. Had heard about this group, which was mostly started in the area and has gone national.

For those who haven't heard me say it here, Alaska has had a record SEVERE winter with record snowfalls and temperatures....

You know......I finally got the courage to sit down and re-string my 12 string acoustic. It's quite the project and I usually avoid it as long as possible :M . It's kinda' like working with spaghetti really. The effort pays off in the end with fantastic, clear sound with fantastic overtones...etc....
