2 speaker stereo vs. 3 speaker 'stereo'

I remember reading assertions that 3 speakers are better for stereo (?) music reproduction than 2 speakers.

What is the advantage of 3 speakers vs. 2? Is it proper sound outside the sweet spot? Why did 2 speakers become the standard?

    Just curious, thanx.

Johan, I can't say whether 3 speakers is better than 2. But if you want to find out, I suggest auditioning a Lexicon. They probably utilize the front 3 as good as anybody. Of course, there used to be Dolby 3 I think. But that really didn't catch on to good.

As far as why it's 2? I think it's just because primarily, we first had mono music. The next logical step was 2 speaker stereo. From there, we stayed at that level until Quadraphonic came along I think. Since that really only developed a small market, 2 channels remained the standard-

Report back on stereo speaker voicing investigation
      by JonMarsh
I've contacted a number of you individually, and we've had some brief side discussion in one of the Wavecor Ardent threads, but I thought I should bring this a little further out front in terms of explanation, experimentation and discussion. This is in regard to evaluating system voicing concepts to...

This is the only forum I really post to here so I am putting this thread here. Mods if there is a better place for this thread, please move it there. Also I figure it might qualify as DIY since all my gear is DIY.

Anyways, I just cleared out one of the spare bedrooms at our house and...

Its a 12W per channel and has the various decoder settings for different Quadraphonic formats. I think its about a...

A new project: fixing my car's stereo
      by fjhuerta
      Hi all!

I know about the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm usually satisfied by my car's stereo - I've never met one I couldn't live with, actually. And as I said before, my wife's Outlander has one I actually enjoy far too much.

      Unfortunately,...

      Stereo Image Question
      by ScottMc
Question on setting up an Onkyo TX-SR805:

I’ve had my receiver for about two weeks now. It sounds great for movies, but when listening to music the stereo image is off center to the left. For example, the person singing does not sound like they are in the center of the sound stage,...
