Infinity is good. However, in a bind, and going the bookshelf way, I would buy the PSB Alpha series bookshelf speakers. Major bang for the buck!.

Actually, those Andrew Jones Pioneers are probably the best bang for buck by a long shot. It's amazing how good they are for how little money they cost. I have some Gen1's and the new Gen2's now.

Dougie's suggestion is a good one.
Those Pioneer's are well respected, with performance far beyond their price point. All the cost went into the components, hence a V basic look & construction. But the pay-off means great sound for fewer $'s if you are not concerned about impressing any one with 'bling' as opposed to good sound quality.

          I also have another suggestion:
          PSB

BTW, I just got those Dayton's bookshelves & a little 15 watt T amp for my daughter as a X-mass gift. Even played directly thru the DAC on her phone they sound surprisingly good. They are not to be overlooked, despite their bargain-basement price. link

And just to make things even more complcated......

You may want to consider computer-audio options which make powered speakers a V interesting consideration.....

(they do have passive speakers, too)

There are too many possible variables with used equipment to be able to give advice with regard to what is & is not a fair price. It should be easy enough for you to find the OEM retail $. Based on the seller's description, hearing the model in question, or on reviews from sources you trust, you will have to decide for yourself what they are worth.

                  Hi,

In researching “wish list” requests for the 1098 I’ve started to develop a sense of what can be realistically added to the 1098 as is and what would require a major hardware upgrade. I thought this worth sharing, since it will provide a context for the next version of the 1098

I figured I could get the most for my money if I did a DIY project, so I posted here. I think the title is pretty clear...I'm looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers to buy or build (used/new, whatever) for $150 OR LESS (which I want to include everything).

The reason I set my budget...
