Laptop Toslink or seperate D/A converter?

I have a Gateway P-6860FX laptop with an mini-optical out that is connected to my Classe SSP-600 to listen to my MP3 files. This is not for serious listening but I'm wondering if there would be any type of improvement if I purchased an external USB DAC? Nothing expensive; maybe in the $100-300 dollar range.

No but Chasw98 just got his and he likes it. Jonmarsh has been playing with one for a while now.

There's also a lot of buzz about it on multiple other forums.

          USB to AES/EBU converter
          by bigburner
Can anyone point me in the direction of a device that will connect the USB 2.0 output of my laptop to the AES/EBU input of my external DAC?

I'm hoping to find an inexpensive converter that will bypass the Windows Kmixer and therefore output a bit-perfect signal.

          Toslink to Coaxial adapters?

So, I'm going to be in a "dilemma" soon.

I currently have the following devices with digital outputs:

Xbox - toslink (I still use the xbox for xbox media center)
          Xbox 360 - toslink
          Dvd player - coaxial

I'm getting a new STB that has...

That's one of the things I usually advise friends NOT to do. There's a certain cost effectiveness to desktop upgrades, and of course, any fumble fingers can work on a modern desktop computer with few worries.

          Toslink auto switch
          by Wireless
I just received my second 400 disc Sony cd changer for use with my pc and slinke control system. I now need an auto switcher for toslink connection. I'm familiar with the DXS from Nirvis, but along with the MSB Digital Director these are $500+.
Does anyone know of a toslink automatic switch any...

          laptop trouble:

Now it looks like my laptop is hosed. I was trying to use spybot, and I only deleted things that were clearly spyware in easy mode, and I rebooted and something to do with the kernal is messed up.
