I have a Gateway P-6860FX laptop with an mini-optical out that is connected to my Classe SSP-600 to listen to my MP3 files. This is not for serious listening but I'm wondering if there would be any type of improvement if I purchased an external USB DAC? Nothing expensive; maybe in the $100-300 dollar range.

No but Chasw98 just got his and he likes it. Jonmarsh has been playing with one for a while now.
