    Sufjan Stevens
    Michigan

He says he is going to write an entire album for each of the fifty states... He's done two. This one is really good though.

Did you see that Alloroc rated "Illinoise" as his top album for 2006? http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=23356
How do you think that Michigan compares to Illinoise?

I'd say they are on par with each other. I lean towards Michigan because it isn't such a marathon listening session but you couldn't force me to pick a favorite track between the two. Illinoise is 22 tracks and 74 minutes. Then he released Avalance, which is a 21 track cd of outtakes from Illinoise.

          Let's just say he's prolific.

Aside from the states theme, I think his best album is Seven Swans, as the songs are crushingly beautiful and for the most part, very sparse. It's an album you can't hide from. It will find your heart and give it a squeeze.

Tonight I am drinking too much whiskey, smoking too many cigarettes, and digging though my teenage years. Anyone seen or read Hi-Fidelity?

I sort my albums auto-biographly... Tonight it's Toots and the Maytals

            IN THE DARK

You cannot listen to this cd without hearing other bands songs... because those other bands stole riffs from these FANTASTIC tracks.

I agree with Lester Bangs. Toots and company are better than Bob Marley.

If only because Toots gave the Clash another song to cover

            And speaking of Hi-fidelity

Does anyone else like Nick Hornby????

Arriaga: cuartetos -- three string quartets composed by Juan Crisostomo Arriaga (1806 - 1826), a musical prodigy often called the "Spanish Mozart" who wrote the three quartets on this album at the age of 18. Having composed 23 major works including a well received opera (when he was 13), Arriaga died of tuberculosis just 10 days before his 20th birthday. Given how striking and attractive the chamber music on this album is, it is intriguing to imagine what Arriagga might have achieved if he had lived longer.

Played by the Cuarteto Casels in their first recording on the Harmonia Mundi label ( HMI 987038 ), this one deserves a place on our "under the radar recordings" list.

Yeah, the novelty of Jack Black wore off for me too..

And for those who thought I ws just in a drunken rant.. Lester Bangs was a music critic.

                              Sorry.

Try Janis Ian (Breaking Silence). Great warm vocals, tight lows & sweet highs.

Michael Praetorius "Terpsichore" selections from the Tersichore Musarum played by the Ricercar Consort conducted by Francois Fernandez and Philippe Pierlot (on different pieces), La Fenice conducted by by Jean Tuberry and La Bande Des Luths conducted by Phillippe Malfeyt. The CD is on the Ricercar label (RIC 205).

"Ricercar" (pronounced 'ree-chair-kar') is derived from the Italian verb "ricercare", which means "to seek out" and in music it denotes a fugue. "Terpsichore" (pronounced "turp-sik-er-ee") means "delight of dancing", and Praetorius' extensive collection of works under that name are a true delight in these performances.

"Shuggie's Boogie: Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues" by Shuggie Otis

                                          Cool bananas.

Shuggie is an early 70's guitarist who allegedly refused an offer to join the Rolling Stones and quit the music scene at the ripe old age of 22.

No doubt because its exhaust notes mimic the most elaborate contrivances of counterpoint in different keys and intervals at multiple and various starting points, where the canonical theme joins seamlessly from its end to its beginning to go on forever in a perpetual loop – the very definitition of “ricercar”. :>)

Sufjan Stevens again... I cannot get enough if Illinoise right now...

He rhymes Decatur with Emancipator for gods sake.

Download a track... just take a looksee. I would start with All The Trees In The Field Will Clap Their Hands.

Makes cheap speakers sound good. Makes good speakers almost sound like the real thing (for a CD). Nice muisic, too - smooth jazz.

Crime of the Century is a good one. I listened to it again last night for first time in years.

Right now I'm listening to Douglas, Jerry - The Best Kept Secret - just bought tickets to see him (though I actually prefer his mid 90's work).

Here's another one that does that: Mike Garson "The Oxnard Sessions: Volume Two" on Reference Recordings. This album was Stereophile's Recording of the Month Jume 1993, and is reportedly Garson's favorite of his work, including the sessions he did backing up David Bowie. :>)

This one could be an entry in the thread "What do you keep coming back to" -- it is not only exceptionally well recorded, but the performances are as enjoyable on the 100th listening as they were on the first. Great music -- real jazz.

The combination of piano, acoustic bass, drums and alto/soprano sax is thrilling, soulful, engaging and soothing all at the same time. There is a lot going on there; it's not just a rhythm on autopilot. While the whole album is well worth listening to all the way through, my favorite tracks are the first (Rumble), fourth (A Song For You) and 10th (I Get A Kick Out of You).

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams, Any other Jack Johnson fans, or am I alone on that one? Anyway, great album.

James Blunt - Back to Bedlam I saw some James Blunt fans earlier in the thread, but this cd is definitely worth mentioning again.

Dire Straits - Making Movies Brothers in Arms is a solid cd and I'll never tire of it, but Making Movies is also, in my opinion, an ESSENTIAL cd for any Dire Straits fan. A little more upbeat and a little more "fun," I'd say. And just like Brothers in Arms, each song is gold.

This record is more pensive than it's predecessors, and I like it, but it's still really no comparison to the live stuff.

Maybe it's just me but I like live records more and more over studio cuts. I like noticing the mistakes, changes, and playfulness of a live show.

What about you guys? Obviously this doesn't hold true for all genres, but in rock and jazz, I'm a sucker for the Live at the _______ record.
