          Pink Martini: Hey Eugene

Intoxicating mixture of big band sound with salsa beat. On computer speakers,
it is great sonic wall paper; on the main system, it is compelling listening.
Either way, it is a lot of fun!

              Mixed Pleasures

Playing now, frequently, are two relatively new and diverse CD's, both special in their own way...

Kyung Wha Chung has several new releases on Decca late last year that are excellent performances and recordings; being partial to the Saint-Saens Violin concertos, this was at the top of my list from her:

In a much different vein, Stanley Clarke's new album "Toys of Men" is his strongest fusion album in years, and a must have-

for the fusion side of Stanley, "Toys of Men" and "The Bass-ic Collection" are the two to have, if you can only have two; "School Days" on the Bass-ic collection is the only CD version to more or less match the dynamics of the LP; every other version I have heard on CD was markedly deficient. Extra points if you can locate the Japanese Import version- I did, but it took a while. :W

Another JM sighting... let me also say welcome back, and congrats on your work sitiuation (sorta) allowing you some extra "human" time...

BTW, this is a hell of a thread... must bookmark and come back for futher data mining... :T

I'm a GG fan as well (saw them open for Frampton and Yes, in '75, yikes..) and got the remastered Live album from I believe that tour, last year.

Wanted to ask if that is one of the 35th anniversary remasters, that Derek Shulman (lead vocalist, turned into a label owner/producer after band) had started to put out, or an earlier one?

He's dedicated to redoing the whole catalog, started with the Live album and is probably 4-5 into it by now... For those looking, DRT entertainment is the company/label that he runs (think they have those Mogwai guys, BTW) and a good place to find the disks.

Trying to properly place your sonic assessment...

Yes, the 35th Anniversary releases are the ones to get, but many, especially the popular ones like Free Hand, are out of print from the label. I had to search a bit to find one of those in the 35th anniversary releases; I have another of Free Hand that was a combo release with another album, remastered in the late 90's.

Yeah, this is a great thread to data mine!

BBVD is so much more fun to see in person than to just listen to! First time I saw them, they were playing in San Francisco at one of Oracle's (the database company) yearly conferences' parties and people were swingin' in the aisles, back in the open areas by the drink tables, all over. Yowzah!

                            Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates

All of her stuff is so well recorded and engineered everyone should have at least one of her albums, whether you care for her music or not, just to hear how well music can be put onto a medium and still sound like music. It will also show just how good your system can sound.

Ruthie Foster - "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster" (2009)

I saw Ruthie Foster perform at Byron Bay (I actually saw her twice) and she has one of the best voices I have ever heard. She's in the same league as Aretha Franklin. I kid you not. She also has a wonderful, engaging personality and a lovely big smile. The CD is pretty good too!

Enjoy this wonderful music for two pianos from two of history's greatest composers. Mozart was without a doubt one of Grieg's first and foremost musical inspirations. What is special about Grieg's adaptation of the Mozart Fantasia in C minor is that he has not reworked it in the traditional manner. Grieg's unusual achievement lies in the fact that he has retained Mozart's text unchanged, adding an entirely new part which is to be performed together with the original. When both parts are played, they interweave and become something entirely new. The Mozart/Grieg Fantasia for two pianos in C minor is on this album surrounded by Mozart's famous Sonata in D for two pianos and Grieg's only original work for two pianos, the lesser known masterpiece Old Norwegian Melody with variations.

Also, I'm seeing more of these dual disc packaging (Blueray + SACD). I hope this is a trend for the future. Maybe it's the gradual decline of the CD that is bringing this on?

                                                            Emmylou Harris - "Anthology" (2001)

Have always loved Emmylou's voice. This album (44 songs) comprises a lot of her early singles, some B-sides as well as a few numbers which were never released before on CD. This amazing collection replaces some old cassettes which I had scrapped some years back.
