    David,

I foolishly took my copy of "Already Free" to a friend's dinner party a week ago and forgot to take it home so I'll have to ask him!

We did actually listen to it at his place and my impression from one hearing was positive. It's a change of direction since "Songlines" - less of Derek the guitar god and more emphasis on Derek the songwriter (I think). It's also more blues/soul and less jazz/world than "Songlines". None of the women at the dinner party asked for it to be taken off so it's probably more mainstream than "Songlines" too. By the way I love "Songlines".

    Sorry that's not much help.

    Nigel.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" (1969)

A wonderful old album. I got it for my wife but I'm enjoying it just as much.

          Jeff Beck - "Performing This Week...Live at Ronnie Scott's" (2008 )

With the release of the DVD delayed until 31 March I was thrilled when this CD was given to me as a gift. It's excellent.

I love that album, but I love On The Beach more.

            Just my two cents.

            Both are great.

Today though, I am on a Band kick... Shape I'm in has been played twice today.

Ok so this post might ruffle the feathers of some of my fellow HT Guide members but oh well.

Since it's in the low 70's here and I have the windows open to let the breeze come through, I thought I would turn on the stereo and do a little work in the yard.

I'll have to do some more research but my early results show that early 70's Allman Brothers carried on a gentle breeze sounds better than any other music.

Drinking a cold beer straight from the bottle on a perfect afternoon after a little yard work... Well, it's one of life's simple pleasures. Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival just makes it that much better.

                Nick Drake
                Bryter Layter.

For those of you who like British folk, this is a classic.

Kind of a soft whispered Astral Weeks, if you get my drift. Nick Drake wrote some tremendous songs and I think of the few albums he put out, this one is my favorite. One of These Things First is a perfect song. Hazy Jane II is a jazzy little ditty that bounces you through the night.

Northern Sky is the song people might know him for, and with good reason. The lyrics are beautiful, but the structure of the song is even more so.

I highly suggest this album. If you can find a way to sample it, do it, and my bet is you'll buy it. The guitar, mostly acoustic, is finely recorded and played. It makes speakers shine.

                5 stars.

If you like alt-country, you'll like the Old 97's. Now 15 years into the business, they still sound fresh and fun.

Wreck Your Life is a good place to start if you don't know the band. The song Victoria says it all in the first few lines. Jangling guitar lines, catchy lyrics, and a foot stomping drummer. What could go wrong?

While Wilco takes it all very seriously, the Old 97's are in it for the fun and the free beer at the bars they play in.

Wreck Your Life is great fun. Play it while the sun is shining.

It'll be about 2-1/2 months before I get anything close to a perfect afternoon here on the island. Oh well, at that point I'll have a whole bunch of them in a row. And yes, it's been proven that the Allmans OTA are a cure for most diseases and ailments.

Listenin' to Seasick Steve's latest album right now....

It's called "I started out with nothin and I still got most of it left"

He's kind of a hobo sings the blues sort of guy tho' he calls it song and dance music. It's good eitherway.

Willie Nelson - "Milk Cow Blues" (2000)

This is one of Willie's best albums without doubt. Great songs (blues standards) and great guest artists including Dr. John, BB King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Susan Tedeschi, Jonny Lang, and Keb' Mo'.

                                    Gentle Giant: Free Hand

Saw these guys with Jethro Tull back in the VERY early 70's, its not easy to find their CDs.

This one is rather impeccably recorded for progressive rock of that era, very lucid midrange, no boost or exaggeration in the treble; occasional low bass; overall, recorded more like classical or Jazz than rock. Oh, and I rather like the music, too! imagine rock chamber music with medieval vocal style

Maybe not the ideal music to clean floors on a Sunday afternoon- Jeff Beck SACD Blow by Blow preceded it, a bit more energetic!!

Naxos produced a winner here -- crystal clear sound, evoking the subtle instrumental shadings of skilled musicians
beautifully playing what started out as unfamiliar works, but upon multiple listenings, are becoming "favorites":

That Mogwai album turned out to be a killer! I LIKE it.

Free Hand? Oh yeah, that's a great listen. Although we're dating ourselves with that one Jon. I've also got Gentle Giant, Three Friends and Octopus, all on vinyl. (I've got to get this interior remod finished so I can get the TT back out)

Mark Olsen & Gary Louris - "Ready for the Flood" (2009)

What a lovely album this is. Mark Olsen and Gary Louris used to play for the Jayhawks back in the mid 90's. On this album they play acoustic guitars (mainly) and sing well crafted songs in two part harmony. Beautiful harmonies they are too.

I bought this album because I thought Gary Louris's last album "Vagabonds" (2008 ) was so good.

They redid the guitar work on that album. Completely ruined a very good album (my favorite Ozzy). I have the original pressing and also the the first remaster of that before they went back messed up, what's his name's (?) guitar work. This guitarist died and I heard that they redid it for some legal reason, something to do with royalties I think. Big mistake though, cost them in the long run, I'll bet.

Okay, I just remembered his name, Randy Rhoads and a most excellent guitarist.

                                                            Here he is:

I haven't listened to this much but I'll bet it's a good one (below). At least reviews on amazon are very positive. Maybe the best way to hear his work now. It has many songs from Ozzy's "Blizard of Ozz."

Oh, you probably don't want to be at the controls when listening to it. :B I don't think the C-17 is supposed to do loops and barrel rolls.
