    JOE STANLEY:
    King Of The Honky-Tonk Sax

From the label's description of the CD:

"Joe's the godfather of the down-and-dirty R&B sax of the '50s and '60s. He led the great Bill Black Combo (Elvis' backup band), toured with Marvin Gaye, and mentored countless Maryland musicians including Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan."

This example of true R&B (with some great Hammond B3, guitar and vocal) is why the Sax was actually banded from the radio airwaves in the 30" & 40's.

    He's suposedly a red-head, too

I've been wanting to get this for some time. But I didnt realize there were any, let alone so many acoustic versions on this disc. How do they sound? I would have preferred the originals, especially since its a greatest hits cd.

That's really great! I lone when this happens. Perhaps check out Camper Van Bethoven now. David Lowry's band before Cracker. I got into them in the late 80's. It was their song 'Take the skinheads bowling'* that caught my attention. Some of their material is quite rare but worth it. The do a fantastic cover of Staus Quo's (remember them!) Pictures of Matchstick men.

Takagi Masakatsu - Journal For People
Huge soundscapes, piano, very melodic and delicate. Brings out emotion in your system, if it can live up to it!

              The Dead Texan - s/t
Again, very emotional piano and drone driven music. Not the best recording in the world, however, this album is mind blowing

I certainly do remember Status Quo. Not my favourite band but they have their place. "Rockin' All Over The World" and "Ice In The Sun" are two other songs of theirs that I like.

Joan Osborne - "Breakfast in Bed"

This CD has pretty universal appeal. I think that the Smooth Jazz folk would enjoy it too. Soul and R&B standards interpreted with feeling by a woman with a great voice.

By the way, I listened to the Jimmy LaFave - "Cimarron Manifesto" CD for the second time last night and it's a cool album.

That Miranda Lambert is one fine looking gal.

Duke Special - Songs from the Deep Forest. Freewheel in particular is such a great track.

Gosh, How'd you guess? Anyway, it's not our fault we Irish have unlimited musical talent! 800 year of repression and all that - there was nothing else to do. :W

(Duke is Northern Irish, made it in the UK before anyone here heard of him)

BTW, Heartbreaker is indeed a great album.

                                      ZZ Top - Tres Hombres

Current track is La Grange. Great disc although not to happy with the cd quality so I have a copy that was made from the origional vinyl and must say wow much better improvment.

I'm listening to a little Maynard Ferguson. It's a GREAT sounding CD (well 2 CDs). Mostly up-beat and "feel good" type of a sound to it.

I've also got about 14 other CDs I just got and have to listen to... Cheap prices on stuff on Amazon.com has gotten to me this month... ha ha. As soon as I listen to some of them, I'll post them up.

Marilyn Manson - Lest We Forget
Hey, sometimes I can get pissed at all these idiots in the world too!
(Broke 100 on the RS dB meter, and Jon Marsh’s Natalie Portman’s held forth with pride.)

Music is that way, you have to ‘be’ in the right mood to ‘get it’ with some works. This is just such an album. Once you get past the initial shock, there is ‘real’ music here. The musicians are really top–notch, and the recording engineering is V good. The ‘covers’ are great on this disc and once in while, it is just fun to go some place different.

It's been a Mahler weekend. In addition to the exciting rendition of the Third Symphony by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Bernard Haitink on a fairly recent CSO CD, I've also enjoyed Des Knaben Wunderhorn by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein and featuring Christa Ludwig, Mezzo-Soprano and Walter Berry, Baritone, a treasurable historic performance on CBS Records- Masterworks.

Speaking of historic, I'm finishing off the evening with Boston's self titled debut album. Still a classic. It's "more than a feeling" that it is still worth listening to for the zillionth time. :>)

Very relaxing music. Thanks to Thelonious Funk for this one.
"Use Your Voice" is the best CD that I've heard for many weeks, and I can tell you it's been a busy time for new music recently in my house.

In case you think that I like all the new music I get, I can assure you that I don't. Even recommendations from reliable sources, research, and listening to 20 seconds of each track doesn't always guarantee success.

                                                          Recent mistakes include:

                                                          Josh Rouse - "Nashville"
                                                          Richard Thompson - "Sweet Warrior"
                                                          Prince - "Planet Earth"
Echo and the Bunnymen - "Songs to Learn and Sing"

None of them are bad albums. They just don't have the x-factor.

                                                              Lucinda Williams - Essence

A bit on the blueish side, but with poetic lyrics, an all acoustic, country/bluegrass kind of style, that works for me.
V good musicians, technically very precise but still with a natural, almost live feel.

I would like to hear her do some jazz standards, her vocal style would work well with that genre, IMHO.

Would like not a lot of instrumental but mostly guitar and strong vocals if there is such thing.

                                                                                    Thanks

The CD is called "Jack O'Diamonds". John Lee Hooker is the man. So far just an acoustic guitar that he "picks" and "hammers" with his hand. It is digitally re-mastered from some 1949 recordings. Apparently these were recorded in his home and never released. The cd was released in 2004.

                                                                                    Hope this helps someone else.
