    That is beautiful.

Besides the TS what other wood working power tools do you own? Planer, jointer, router, drill press, belt sander, etc?

I would love a planer and jointer. Those are probably on my list of what to buy next. I also would like a decent sized bandsaw at some point. I do have a router and a tiny drill press along with a random orbital sander and biscuit cutter. A buddy of mine has a larger drill press and a dovetail jig too so I borrow those from time to time.

I've been waiting on a planer or jointer just because my lumber yard sells stuff that's workable but at the same time, this project's top and bottom shelves have revealed to me how those tools are necessary to really get flat and square boards. I was able to get the glue ups done ok but they're definitely not flat!

Maybe I'll get another project or two done to make sure I really really need a planer or jointer and then figure out what I should get. A combo one would be nice but I know there are compromises. Any insight would be appreciated!

      EDIT:
Now, with stain. It's a Watco dark walnut danish oil.

That really looks fantastic. I am very impressed of how tight your joints are especially with the top and shelf.

Nice job. I got a planer and jointer this past summer, wish I have gone with a planer Jointer combo instead. I would have spent about the same amount of money and ended up with a wider Jointer.

Thanks. It's a good five foot project. Too much closer and then you'll see the joints aren't that tight after all. Not bad for my first try at mortise and tenons.

WilZirkle - any thoughts on which combo one you would get? I'm leaning towards just a planer at the moment.

Not really I looked mostly at the Grizley ones, the only issue being that the tables are so short in comparison the the width of the jointer. I probably would have gone with the 10 inch. The jet models all have terrible reviews.

I ended up getting my planner first 13" dewalt and then finding a 8 inch yorkcraft jointer on craigslist.

A promotional deal plus no shipping plus a 5% ebates discount plus a bunch of Home Depot gift cards burning a hole in my wallet put me over the edge.

I may end up with a jointer at some point as well but most of my stock comes pretty straight already so I think I can get away with not needing a jointer for now as jointing the edges can be done with the table saw or router.

I'm actually keeping the saw outside for the time being. I have it up on pressure treated 2x4s and got it well covered with a liberal coating of the T-9 spray previously recommended. The rain yesterday and today will be a good test so we'll see if I'm ok leaving it out there. But so far, based on my inspection yesterday, it should be ok.

Otherwise, you're right, I'd need a bigger shed for the planer and who knows what else I acquire in the coming months.

Oooh, nice! :T I've come pretty close a couple of times to buying a DeWalt planer, but figure to postpone that still a little while. Actually, a 10' x 12' storage shed on a concrete pad is likely one of my investments this December! Long overdue..., and at that size, can be done without a building permit.

Apologize for the crappy pic but here's how I ended up solving the base issue. Basically, it's just a 3/4" piece of oak plywood supported by 2x4 with a dado. As such, I was able to use the thicker axles and position the wheels close in to eliminate the previous bending moment issue. Seems to work quite well. I may strengthen the connection between the axle and the platform. Perhaps clamp down from the top to the plywood with another 2x4 with a groove cut in it. Also, the saw sits pretty well in the sled as is, but I may try to make that connection tighter as well. Could just be integrated into the 2x4 clamp from the previous sentence. Kill two birds with one stone.

                          Buy a table saw?

Or possibly a radial arm saw.

I used to have a radial arm saw and if you needed a table saw, you just pull the saw out, turn it, and lock it in. It basically...

If anyone is currently looking for an excellent smaller table saw, the Sears Craftsman Professional 10" portable table saw (similar to Ryobi BT3100) is currently on sale and can be purchased for $287.21 + tax. You have to use Bing cash back and several coupons, but hey, it's a $242 savings....

                          Hi

I'm in the marked for a table saw.
I will use it to rip hardwood up to decent size as well as for presition work.
For the largest sheet cutting I will probably continue to use my festool saw with guide rail.

I'm playing with the idea about importing/getting...

I have been reading the forum for a year, eagerly awaiting the time when I left my small apartment, and gained a workshop.

I am lacking a table saw and want to get something in the $500+ range.

Things that come to mind are Rigid, Delta, Hitachi and Grizzly.
