And more drivers have been ordered this morning from the European Sector, for dedicated test builds for the Xtreme Kii development evaluation.

Does the one who dies with the most drivers win?

Well, for those who are traditionalists and prefer looking at a round cone style midrange, we may have good news...

In the form of first QNF measurements of the SB15CAC30-8 in a small well damped test enclosure...

At 1W, 86 dB output level, 800Hz to 3kHz HD is approximately -70 dB, an excellent result for a speaker. Performance is still very good down to 200Hz, and the spikes at 3500Hz can be reduced greatly by a notch filter, as past practice for many other designs has shown.

Looks like a very good alternative at first blush to the venerable but unobtainable Accuton C79.

That measures well, nice and smooth Any thoughts on the little glitch at 500hz?

Probably a minor surround resonance - don't forget the efforts PuriFi goes to suppress that kind of behavior- efforts that come at a price. One might argue that compared with the typical room acoustics issues and setup for an average user, this is minuscule or undetectable.

The CAC series is still a pretty strong statement for price-versus-performance, even after a few price increases.

In a few different discussions and measurement updates, one possibility to be examined is an Ardent update with a couple of possibilities to be evaluated on the bottom end- HO sealed or with PR, and HF with PR. The SB15CAC looks like the best value proposition choice for midrange- three pairs are on hand. Tweeter is less clear- if availability were not an issue, the DA25TX wins hands down. I have about 6-1/2 pairs on hand; three may or may not be spoken for soon. And I have another pair on order through a European vendor that says they will deliver in May.

Of course, there are other good candidates for the midrange, like the SS 12mu part that as been used before, or the PTT4.0M08-NFC-01 or the 4 ohm version, but these are in much different pricing territory.

Apart from the Peerless, other possibilities include some SB parts, as well as a PT2522 MOD3A build. Now, to save time, lets see if Steve can fab me just one front panel for testing...

FYSA, PE has started to show those new (old) Peerless parts as available in May as well.

Is that ~$10 Peerless mid competitive with the CAC series? The SL-0512R01-08 I think?
