    JBL EON 615 Repurpose

So I have an EON 615 that's hard to find a repairer for, plus I want to try my hand at converting it to a usable passive speaker again myself.

I understand that's there's a lot of active magic happening in that huge cluster of circuit boards, but if I were to only use the drivers, is there anything I need other than a crossover and an amp? Will it sound trash if I build a 2nd order Riley @ 1.8kHz (recommended crossover) then power it with just a normal 200W amp?

Alternatively, how would I just make a subwoofer out of the LF driver? Do I just need a low-pass filter and an amp?

I am a complete n00b at this, so any help is appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

That's a pretty beefy speaker! My first thought would revolve around how easy it might be to remove all the electronics and seal up the cabinet. Provided that can be done, I really don't see any reason you couldn't turn it into a passive speaker. That said, using a book value crossover without baffle step compensation might not produce the best result, as it rarely does.

    Couple questions:
    • Whereabouts do you live? You might have someone around with measurement gear, which could be used to design an appropriate crossover for your application.
    • Speaking of application, do you intend to just run one of these for parties and such, which sort of seems like maybe what it was intended for? Indoors or outside?
    • Where are you getting the advice for an LR2 crossover @ 1,800 Hz? Was that on the product page and I just missed it?
    • Do you already have an amp?
    • Do you have a budget and a timeline?

My first speakers were a pair JBL L-100As that I bought in 1973. I always enjoyed them and still use them today. Their easily identified sound, the so-called West Coast sound, was once a highly touted marketing feature. Ad copy claimed that musicians and...

According to Dickason, the general rule of thumb (of course there are exceptions) for the lower crossover limit for midrange and tweeters is to be at least 2x the FS of the driver, 3-4x is even better.

He also suggests that the upper level crossover for woofers and midranges should be...

I've got a pair of JBL J350a 3-way loudspeakers (circa 1980-ish) that I use in my second system in the upstairs den. The drivers are in good shape and they sound decent but one thing I didn't like about them was the cabinet construction and wide baffles that they have (15-3/4"). I've got some...

I've recently built 4 TM's and 1 MTM for HT. For the MTM I used Audax 6.5" (2) and a Morel CAT378 Dome tweeter. The 6.5's are rated at 89 Db and the Morel is rated at 93 Db. The TM's are Pioneer 6.5" and the Morel CAT378. The Pioneer is rated at 93 Db. I wanted a very dynamic system which...
