Here is a very simple solution for controlling your HTPC. It is a serial port IR unit that allows you to control various programs on your PC with an IR remote.

Used in conjunction with a software package called Girder you can take control of your PC with a remote Girder is a program that can take any input ( keyboard, remote control, internet ) and translate that into actions on your computer. These actions can be for example controlling winamp, a DVD player or shutting down windows. Of couse there are many, many more things that you do.
