Ok, this isn't HTPC, but it is PC and there is a DVD player in one of the machines, lol. So, I put this here.
Over the weekend, I was a little scarce here at HTGuide. Well, Sat and Sun. Sorry about that. I was installing Lexnet. Which is just a "loose wired" base network between my laptop and desktop, some 6 feet away, but with extensions for 3 more nodes. Loose wire has multiple meanings here!
So, Saturday evening started with me and my daughter going to CompUSA and shopping computer stuff. Found the network kit with a 5 port hub for 129. Also picked up a cable to put my rocket Replicator in the mix. Why do they make like 3 kinds of SCSI? My SCSI use was previously SCSI 1, but the Rocket replicator had like SCSI 2 or 3. So, I had to have a stinkin 60 buck cable to adapt the two. Sure, I could have got an adapter plug, but odds are good, by the time I picked up another cable, it would have been just as much. Did someone tell the makers of SCSI cables, that they are like high end audio cables or something? I mean, great day, they price this stuff by the foot in 20.00 increments it seems!!! Talk about your rackets. Cable probably cost 3.00 to make.
Anyway, moving on:
Eventually, I will put my daughter on Lexnet too, but first we need a new computer for my desktop. (planned 800 Mghtz), and upgrade her to the Sony (puey). Sorry, the Sony never has been on my favorites list, what a mistake.
It gave me great pleasure to casually cast one of it's PCI boards aside this weekend. It was something that I have no idea what it was for anyway. Something about I-link, or S-link. I forget. All I know is, I never plugged anything into it anyway! lol. So, I jerked it loose, strapped the two wires together that were plugged into it, and used the scarce PCI slot for the much heralded Lexnet card, with 109 Megalex speed.
Well, the installation seemed smooth at first, but I never could see remote1's hard drive on Base1, and vica versa. I got to a point that I messed up my ethernet protocols in networking. Real smart huh? Anyway, net result was, I did a complete re-install of my laptop OS, and upgraded it from 95 to 98, after it still didn't work on 95! Finally, I call my Niece's husband, who is network savvy and asked him about it. He said, do you see a light on the cards? I said, well, the laptop's network connection is built in. But no, I don't see one on the Sony! I jiggle the wire around, the light comes on, and suddenly, Lexnet is alive!
What a pain this was, but now, I can store things on my desktop's hard drive, and not tie up so much storage space on my laptop's scarce commodity, it's HD.
I hope this will pay dividends for my operation of HTGuide. I know it will if we ever get DSL in my neighborhood!
