    3-2 pulldown obsolete?

I will be keeping a close eye on this area, as I get closer to buying my FPTV I'm going to build a HTPC. As I understand it selectable scan rates that are a multiple of the film's frame rate (24 frames per sec) will eliminate the need for the pulldown conversion!...Just another reason to think HTPC :W

You're definitly on the right track there, Kenny. When working with an HDTV compatible input, there's no choice but to use 60Hz refresh rates, and after the software or hardware player does the conversion to progressive scan, they still must do 3/2 pulldown to playback at 60Hz. At 72 Hz, it's definitely smoother. Higher rates are really dependent on the projector, because near the top rates you may start getting into more visible artifacts because of bandwidth limitation, slight ringing on waveforms due to very slight impedance mismatches, etc., and they all show up more at higher scan rates. But, it does help brightness and "solidity". But most people don't have a front projector that's capable of over 100 kHz horizontal, which is what you start to need with refresh rates like 96 Hz at higher resolutions.

I'm keeping an eye on "hi-Rez's web site, they have some very nice projectors, perhaps a few bucks more than others, but from what I hear their service is outstanding. Well worth a few extra bucks.
They've got a Barco 1609 that I've been looking at, but unfortunately I haven't got 11 grand saved up yet...plus this monster may be alittle big for my home theater, I don't want a huge screen...maybe something about 84" wide (16X9)

I've heard a lot of good things about Hi Rez also, so I doubt you'd go wrong working with them. Even with b-stock or refurb prices, it's still some serious loot, and the setup is a chore. But, a top of the line proejctor is a beautiful sight to behold, once it's all sorted out- particularly driven with an HTPC! (oops, my biases are showing again!). Screen choice with a CRT is critical, I'm partial to DA-LITE High Power material, for bang for the buck.

        Regards,

        Jon

Set-up and maintenance shouldn't be a problem for me, I spent many years as an avionics tech, part of my job was setting up and converging FPTV's on aircraft.
