Transferring files with crossover cable. HELP!

Quick help, please.

I'm sitting here with an ethernet crossover cable, a new computer and an old computer.

The new computer is connected to a broadband router, so the ethernet port is being used.

I want to copy some files from the old computer to the new computer using the crossover cable.

The old computer does not have monitor. It is just plugged in with the AC cord and the crossover cable to the router.

How do I go about getting access to the HD on the old computer from the new computer?

I'm sitting here hoping someone will find this message and give me some help soon.

Here's a simple program that will allow you to view your monitor-less pc on your current pc: http://realvnc.com/products/personal/
you'll have to hook up a monitor to the old one first for setup/install. But, it does allow you to see the desktop of the old pc on the new one. You'll also need to know the IP of the old pc.

Well one thing, if your router doesn't automatically configure itself, a crossover cable won't work, you need a regular ethernet cable...since I'm guessing your router is something like a 4-port switch as well...so both PCs can be plugged into the router at the same time??

Next thing to do (easiest) is to manage the PC from your current (monitored) PC. If the old one has Win2k/XP on it and you know the PC name and a username/password with admin rights, you can manage the PC and create shares all day long from that old PC, then just map a drive to it from the new PC.

Other than that, yep, VNC is about the best you can get, and free...

Yep - easiest is the shared drive option if that is sufficient. For all you techies out there - there is a great r/c utility called Net Support Manager and is probably the best remote control package out there. While not free, if using commercially, it offers some really great features. One feature I like is its performance. Its coding is tighter than all the VNC variants - therefore these is no lag. It also runs as a service so rebooting is a cinch. Finally, it's added value includes audio - it will play back audio and video via the terminal session from the machine you're connected to. Useful.
