    360 upconverter??

I've read that the 360 can upconvert dvds, but when I pop one in my drive(both standard drive and hd-dvd drive), it still is only outputting at 480p. Am I missing something? I did the M$ upgrade(at least I thought I did)...

My system is being connected to my kds-60a2000 via component...

    Sony kds-60a2000\Panasonic BD-55k\XBOX 360 Premium(20gig)Slingbox\Xbox(flashed) running XBMC

The 360 does not upconvert DVDs. It should play HD discs in any of the HD formats though (though I don't think it does 1080p, just 1080i for some reason -- even though the console does 1080p).

It doesn't do 1080p because you cant do 1080p over component video. But in december the HDMI cable will be released and then you can do 1080p. As for the dvd no it doesnt upconvert just plays at 480p.

        Uhm, yes you can...

My display even shows 1080p vs. 1080i.

It all depends on the output connection- CSS rules limit what's allowed on component, but VGA is in the clear, even on HD-DVD for now, with ICT not being implemented.

Which probably explains why the HD-DVD discs are only displaying 1080i and not 1080p.

The most recent dashboard update supports 1080P on VGA. Most sets with component inputs won't work with 1080P inputs. VGA is the way to go with the XBox 360, IMO.

Dang...I have a KDS-60a2000 and the VGA input is rather subpar. Is there any VGA to HDMI converter or anything like that...

For megabucks, yes- it requires complete digitizing of the signal.

Your Sony is a set I would really like to like, as in principle the DILA/SXRD technology is the best possible digital technology (without the temporal dithering, rainbows, etc associated with most DLP sets). However, early sets had bugs in the deinterlacing of 1080i signals, the color primaries are "off", and the VGA input only accepts 1366X768 max input resolution (what the heck were they thinking? this sounds like some DA idea from a Marketing guy, or a system design hangover from the circuitry of their older HD sets which only had 1366X768 panels). The Sony DRC processor also has some issues with de-interlacing film source material, something kind of surprising in this day and age. Basic picture quality as regards contrast, shadow detail, and ability to set a solid D6500 color temp are quite good, as is the display brightness and uniformity over the whole screen, especially for a three chip design.

That's a Samsung DVD-HD1000 DVD player, reputed to upconvert 480P DVD to 1080i or 720P! However, there is a catch. DVDs that are copy protected will cause the screen to flicker, then it's converted back to 480P. I do understand there's a mod for this, that I assume would make it upconvert...

Here's my "new" DVD player, the Samsung DVD-HD1000.

This DVD player was really a surprise. I'd not heard of it, until accidentally finding one used on the net. Not knowing what it was, I went to the Samsung site to research it. What I saw was a beautiful player, that exuded...

                    HDMI Upconversion? is it 1080P?
                    by Rolyasm
A few thoughts and questions. I see many recievers that "upconvert to HDMI" but don't list any specs. Does that mean they send 1080P over the HDMI, or could it be something else? The next step is that I am looking at Onkyo's 805 and 875. Both upconvert, but the 875 says it uses HQV Reon for...
