    Pooched

I installed the latest Windows security update that automatically downloads onto
    my PC..
Now I can't boot up my computer!!
Actaully , it boots up but doesn't make it to the Windows welcome screen.
Just get a blank screen prior to that.

Trev, try rebooting in safe mode, and see if you can undo the change there.

Power up and hold down the F8 key until a screen comes up asking you what you would like.

Select "load last known good configuration" and see if that can fix it.

If not then try that F8 again and load in safe mode. Let it start and from there go to start , run and type "msconfig"

Then look for system restore button and see if you can restore from there.
    I did try that.
    "Load last known configuration.
Also tried loading from Safe mode but can't boot from there either.
I get a continuous screen that says..
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system 32\drivers\
except each line after drivers\ i get a different message that ends in .sys
    Example..
    \NDIS.sys
    \prosync1.sys
    \nv-agp.sys
all together 24 different .sys messages.

Can you see the last .sys file that loads before it hangs?

You'll probably have to do a repair install of XP from the CD, most likely.

You have an nVidia card, right? There is a user on Broadband Reports that is having a similar issue that you're having, a BSOD after installing the latest security update. Theirs seems to happen when it's loading the video driver. You would think that safe mode would still work though.

Yoiu may have some corrupt files that are not allowing drivers to load. You may have to use the recover console with the Windows xp disk.

Put that in the drive, boot for the CD and launch recover console. From there type in "chkdisk \r" and let the system fix scan the drive for errors.

        Kevin!
Yes I have the Nvidea Geforce 6800 GT O/C card from BFG.

The last script to show before it hangs while starting in Safe Mode is...
        multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system 32\drivers\Mup.sys

Trev, your system may not be set to boot form CD.

Put the windows CD in your drive and boot the system holding the delete key. once in the bios, set the boot odrer to CD first,

Restart and the system and you should get a "Press any Key to boot form CD-Rom"

Let windows set up run through it's stuff, until the Do you want to install or repair windows comes up. Use the Repair recovery console choice. That will load and your screen will look like DOS.

Type in chkdsk \r That will start a scan of your hard drive to see if any files are corrupt, which I think it should find a few.

Ocne done type Exit and see if the system will start.

However, typing chkdsk\r is not recognized.

              Type chkdsk /r

That's chkdsk, space, forward slash (the one below the question mark), R.

                That worked Kevin..

                It says..
"The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"

                Then
                C:\>

Right, /  sorry about that,

                  Doesn't sound good Trev.....

At that repair console try "fdisk /mbr" to see if the Boot loader is screwed. That command will fix the boot files.

BTW, if ever you type something in ath that command screen and it gives youa "Not recognized: Just type "help" and a page of command syntax will appear. There you can see all your choices.

mmm.... I am reminded why I like linux. except when I don't (can NOT get WINE configured to work with the programs I want to use yet... though I guess some of my troubles may in fact be the due to running an A64 kernel...)

If you have data on this disc that you want, my suggestion at this point would be to grab a second hard drive, pull the old one out, put the new one in, and install Winblows on that. Then put the old drive in and see if you can do anything from your new install as far as copying your data.

This is also why i still partition my Windows drive. I can format and start over on the OS and not worry about touching my data drives.

There is a good chance the hard drive is fine. The corrupt file could have come from any situation.

Anyway, if you have your XP CD, you should be able to boot off it and try a different type of recovery. You get another chance at recover a bit along the install. This recovery will not wipe your disk or programs out.

I'm not sure what it actually does, but I know it removes files and replaces them from the CD (at least that's what it appears to do).

Well Trev, at this point you have nothing to lose but run the Windows repair.

Unless anybody else has anymore suggestions.... :scratchhead:

Boot from Windows CD and let it run through the set up (have your SCSI drivers on floppy ready) and press F6 to load the SATA drivers for your Raptor.

Let it roll through until the Windows Set-up screen appears.

                                    Choose Setup Windows XP Now

                                    Press F8

Windows should find the existing Windows Installation, it will ask you if you want to repair or install a fresh copy. Select "Repair"

Sit back and let it do it's thing. It will look like it installing new, however its just re-installing files that runs windows, your data and settings will be kept.

I get ready to run the windows XP repair.
I dig out my sata driver disk..insert it into the floppy drive.
The Windows XP disc is already in the drive.

                                      I start up the PC..
I missed the chance to boot off the Windows disc.
I get the screen indicating the windows shut down problem
then have the choice to start in safe mode ,,etc..
                                      I choose to start normally..

Then all of a sudden , the PC after booting goes into the
                                      Windows welcome screen.:scratchhead:
This is where it would come to a complete dead stop just prior.
Anyways, she finishes the welcome screen and loads up windows.
Everything is good to go. :scratchhead:

So I wonder if it was the Sata drivers that were not loading and by
putting in the floppy disc with the drivers is what fixed it.
When windows was starting ,finishing loading, I did get a
message indicating new usb device recognized and installed.

So anyways,,I am now backing everything up on my WD Retrospect
External back-up Hardrive. Just to be cautious.

All this from a reboot from a windows security update from
                                      Thursday night.
