    InFocus SP4805 connections

I have a question regarding InFocus' SP4805 projector that I need answered before buying the projector and additional equipment. I need to connect an X-box and a DVD player to the projector, and am wondering how the get the best possible picture.

    X-box problem:
I live in Denmark with the European (probably UK) X-box version, which has SCART (RGB) and S-video out. Is it possible to connect the RGB SCART out on the X-box to the component input on the 4805? Or would I have to use the S-video, which I assume would mean a reduction in picture quality? On a secondary note, I expect to use the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound output on the X-box, preferably through an optical connection.

    DVD problem:
I have a 4-year old DVD player, Pioneer DV-525, with RGB SCART out, but no component or DVI out. Is it possible to connect the RGB SCART out to the component input on the 4805 and still get a good picture? Or would I have to buy a new DVD player with DVI out, like DENON DVD-1910, to get a good picture?

Any suggestions on how to get the best picture with an X-box and a DVD player connected to the SP4805 projector?

    Thanks.

    Hi Rune, :welcome:

I had some similar questions so I'll try to help you out:

For pal xbox you can use a component cable. You can only get it by ways of import, though. Either you can ask a specialist game shop to order it for you, or you can try to obtain it online. If I am not mistaken, it is called a hdtv cable in the U.S. That cable will also provide you with an optical output.
One more thing: I too was very sceptical about the quality of s-video(having witnessed the awful PQ on my first projector panny ptae 100), but the xbox hooked via svideo on my current plv z1 was actually pretty decent(but now I use the component cable).

Of course, you could try to make use of the dvd player on board of the xbox, but that is not something I would really recommend when using a big screen. It is pretty obvious that the xbox is first an foremost a games machine.

As to your question to convert RGB Scart to component: I've been told that it is possible but my attempts with a prefabricated cable haven't been successful(scart to component). I have been told that you would have to make a cable yourself with a good knowledge of the layout scheme of scart and the output scheme of the dvd player. It has something to do with the sync on green colour, :?? but that is way out of my knowledge, I am sure other guys at the forum can help you out much better than I can. :T

I believe you could also try to make use of the computer input on the projector, but that is something I would like to have confirmed myself.

The dv 525 is getting a bit long in the tooth, but is still an okay machine
You wouldn't believe however, what spectacular improvements can be made when switching to a newer player (I have switched from pioneer dv 717 to an arcam dv 88+), especially if it enables you to switch from svideo to component progressive scan. :E
So if the above mentioned conversion is troublesome and perhaps costly, I would suggest a newer player. If the infocus has a decent deinterlacer on board, then a “raw” component signal would suffice to get progressive scan images, which means that a, relatively cheap, new player with a component output would be adequate.

    Good luck!

    Jurgen
