Trevor's Excellent FPTV Adventures featuring the Matinee 2HD

The Matinee 2HD has already arrived.
The 106" Da-Lite Cinema Contour HCCV screen
should arrive before the end of the month.
In anticipation of the screen to arrive , some changes where
required to make room for the 52"X92" dimension screen
which will eventually replace the old Toshiba 61" RPTV.
    Today I started the process.

Here is a walk through with Photo's...

    The original room set-up

The beginning of taking everything apart.

First step was to pull the speakers out. The Servo-15 located in the
corner has to be moved to the inside as the 6 1/2 Audio rack has to
    go into the corner.

The Studio Matinee 2 HD waiting for action. Purchased from
    AVdeals for $2,799 CDN.

The wall were the Da-Lite Cinema Contour screen will be mounted.

Here is the approx area on the ceiling where the 2 HD will be
mounted. Cables on order are the CatCables Tigress Components.
A 9 meter length will be required for connection to the Toshiba SD-9200
    DVD player.

The Audio rack was much too heavey to move, so the Parasound
amps had to be disassembled to make the rack lighter for moving.

Here is the half empty rack after moving it over. Well over 500 LBS
    when full of gear.

More stuff all over the room

I used tape to mask the area in which the screen would be mounted.
The Cinema Contour was ordered with a Protrim finish which is to assist
in managing light spill. The trim is three inches wide. Unfortunately the
only tape I had was the same color as the wall, so I used a pen to highlight the actual location the screen would end up when set-up.

    Actual screen placement highlighted.
I needed to know exactly where the screen was going to be set in order for the Servo-15 sub's , Studio CC center channel and Studio 100's
to be placed in the correct location and not obstruct view of the screen.

Speakers, Subs and center channel in place.

A close-up of the Tower of Power, reassembled.

A front view from the center seating area. As you can see,
the 106" viewing diameter is much larger than the old 61" viewing area.

    Thanks for looking!
I will add updates as they occur.

Looks like you are almost ready

Bet it took longer than you thought, especially having to stop and take photos along the way

Now to get that PJ mounted and wired up

Trevor what happened to your SVS subs?
              Andrew,
They are right behind the couch.

              Those look like Paradigm 2200's...
              am I right?
              Bent,
One is the Parasound 2205 (220wx5)
The other is the Parasound 3500 (350wx2)
I use the 2205 to power the rear surrounds and
I have the Center Channel Biamped..
The 3500 is bi-wired and powers the fronts

Pat,,The picture taking didn't take to long..That's why some of them are a little dark as I did the point and shoot routine. Some of the lighting was not good in the room.
I am going to take some more today.

              Dean and George,,Thanks.

I'm sure that's a lot of work there, well I know. Looking good though.

At least we'll know when you say yours is bigger than ours, we'll know your half right anyway, indeed your screen is one of the larger ones.

You need to check your email to Trev.

Lex,,I don't think anybody can surpass your quality of Audio without selling of the house! :yesnod:
To this point , I am very pleased with my Audio. The video is what was lacking. Finally I will have a Video display that is somewhat in the same ratio to my sound.
Big Sound plus Big Video..That's what I hope to achieve.

                    Thanks Erik!!

                          Lookin' good Trev!

That's a big screen (106") but I can verify for you that it will look just as good as a 92" image with the 2HD. We ended up with 97" but only because Angibug says that's big enough for her in our small room.

Nice rack of equipment too... and all those subs... man your place is shakin'!

                            Trevor.

How do like the Servo-15's. I've thought about upgrading to one of them in the past. ( I have a PS1000 right, about 6 years old ).

Also, I have enough trouble getting the balance setting right with one sub. How the heck do you set up 3 8O

Anyway.... your room, set up and gear looks great ( your amps put my old HCA-600 to shame )

                              Thanks Chris and Sonnie!

                              Glen,,
I also have a Paradigm PS-1000, Its currently in use in the Family Room.
You will love the Servo-15. It offers nice smooth bass with lots of depth that fills the room. You don't need to worry about that distorted boom or drone that you get with the PS-1000.
As for controlling the Subs , I have two X-30 controllers that enables you to set your frequencies and volumes. I had used a Y adapter in order to seperate the 2 Servo-15's to one X-30 and the other X-30 controls the 2 SVS subs. The SVS subs also have a Samson amp to drive them and also allows control over the volume of output.
                              Thanks for liking my set-up.

                                Thanks Trevor.

If you had to pick one over the other, would you choose your Servo-15 or your SVS sub ( I had never heard of the SVS's till I started reading here, and I've never heard one ).

Also, with your PS1000. Do you get any sort of hum coming from it. I've had mine with several different stereo components in a few different houses over the years - and it seems to be the same everywhere. The hum is coming through the speaker - not directly from the power supply. Its not loud, but when everything else goes quiet - there it is. I had a tech look at it once and he said it looked to be just the way its designed ( and I have faith in his knowledge of electronics ). The only thing that seemed to reduce the noise was to plug it into an isolation transformer. I was just curious if someone with the same model has the same problem.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain a bit.

                                  Glen, no problem.

I would take my dual Servo's over anything else I have heard so far.
They fill the room with bass and blend perfect with my room acoustics.
Never boomy. They are keepers for a long time to come.

As for the PS-1000, I don't have any problems that are noticable.
I did have a hum once, however a sheilded cable fixed it.
So I am not sure what may causing the hum you experience with yours.
Only solution I can suggest is to upgrade..

I am off this weekend and will be setting up the Screen and Projector.
It has been a long wait..
My job has kept me quite busy of late.

                                              Here we go!!

The screen is up and I also connected the projector, however I only had it
sitting on a table. Tomorrow I will mount it to the roof.

The following pics show the process of assembling the screen
and then mounting it onto the wall.

This is were we left off before the screen arrived.

The 61" RPTV is now out of the room and the screen assembling starts.

Here is a close -up of the frame. The thickness is 3" and you may
notice the fabric finish. That's the pro-trim which was optional. It helps to
                                              control light spillage.

                                              Getting the frame put together.

Snapping the screen to the frame.

The frame and HCCV screen fully asembled.

A close up of the frame & screen made by Da-Lite.

Finally!!! The 106" Diagonal screen mounted to the wall.

Another view of the Theater room!!

                                              Tomorrow we mount the projector.

I had played around a bit last night and the audio was definately not
what I had been used to. The center sounded somewhat boxy, hollow.
I have another stand that I will be trying today.
I woun't be able to put it at the center of the screen as it is directly against the wall.
I can move it so it is level with the bottom though..
Should the center be pulled out or should it be close to the wall?
I also set the projector on the table and had it running too.
The pictures not too bad, but I will get it mounted onto the roof today.
I have no choice and wil have to go 13' distance VS the 12' premium distance that I had calculated..
                                                  Anyways,,I do have a problem.
When plugging in the FPTV..Even before turning it on..All my speakers
experience interference and I get an annoying hum from them?.
I tried to plug the projector into the back wall, instead of the front, and had the same results??
I may have to install a dedicated line for this.

                                                    Fixed the power problem.
Using a different power cord solved the issue.

                                                    Anyways,,
                                                    The projector is now mounted.
Just have to clean up the cables a little.

First bracket attached to the I-Beam in the roof..Not an easy thing to find.
However I was lucky. Anyways , she is very solid.

                                                    Completing the roof mount process

                                                      Trevor,

                                                      The screen looks great! 8)

The center channel should be as close to the same distance as the main fronts as possible and you might want to tilt it a bit to aim it at the main listening area.

The hum might be an open ground. I'd check your wiring. And look for speaker wires close or touching power wires.

The HT looks like it's coming along quite well.

Trevor, I have to ask. I know your in the basement, so the odds that you could add supports between the rafters for the mount is slim to none, unless you ripped open your drywall ceiling to add supports. Which I know you didn't do.

My concern is, that's a lot of weight to be hung only from drywall. An accidental tug on a cable, could rip the whole thing out and you'd have disaster.

Solution? Carpentry. Add a base mount that spans 2 ceiling joists, and is firmly secured with screws. then you secure to the braces with the ceiling mount, and you've got a solid mount.

I've never mounted one, but I am willing to bet this really should be done with existing construction.

You could for example use 1 X 2s as a box, then mount a plywood cover over them, to make it look nice. Paint it, then secure the projector mount to that box assembly.

As for the bracket to the roof.
I used 4 inch #14 screws and have drilled into the joist beam above the stucco. It wasn't hte easiest to find , but I did it..She is in there solid and I could hang off there with my 180 LB frame if I wanted to. The 9lb Projector is not going anywhere.
                                                          Thanks for the concern..

                                                            We are up and running..
The cabling has been tacked into place, however
I plan to get some plastic tubbing to encase to wiring in order
                                                            to have cleaner look.

                                                            Here are some final shots!!

A view of the projector mounted from the ceiling. The power cord along the wall will be encased in a plastic tubing in order to clean it up.

The Catcable 9 meter Tigress component tacked along the wall.
The 9 meter length ended up being exactly correct.

The rest of the Catcable Tigress component.

                                                            A view from the front.

                                                            Another view from my throne!!

Here is a screen shot. I didn't use a tripod so it could have been cleaner.
You can get the idea though!. A beautiful clean image. No screen door visible..BTW what is screen door??

That looks awsome Trevor. I was thinking of getting the HCCV material for my screen, but went with the Firehawk instead. The HCCV looks very similar.

You may want to make a stand extension for your centre channel to get it closer to the screen. It looks like you have a foot and a bit between the speaker and the screen. Disregard if this is already in the works.

I put a couiple of wall brackets and a shelf just below my screen for my center channel speaker. It lines up with the left and right, which are also attached to the wall below the screen at the far corners. They are all tilted up slightly. Of course, this is easy for me to do as I am using Boston Acoustic satellites about 8 inches high.

But everything is looking good , ol' buddy.

Welcome to the world for front projection.

The HCCV was highly recommended by other that have this Projector, so it was an easy decision.
The FireHawk was also recommended but was much more costly, so I opted for the Da-Lite.
I have raised the center channel..however still plan to arrange my speakers and tweek for best sound.

Hope to see you here more often!!
