Here are the basic formulas for the 4:3 aspect ratio. Complements of David @ Carada: No, he didn't invent it,

    4:3 aspect screen:
Width divided by 4 multiplied by 3. OR height multiplied by 4 divided by 3. So if your image width is 84" wide, then the height is 63" (84/4*3). Or conversely, if your image height is 63", then the width is 84" (63*4/3).

    I think this logically follows:
16:9 would be width divided by 16 multiplied by 9.

or height multiplied by 16 divided by 9.

    example to prove point
    Let's see, 16" wide screen divided by 16 = 1 multipled by 9 = 9

So, that's your formula. Now what does don't post member... mean?

Lex, I think he's referring to your... uh... prior "claims" about "member" dimension gains over the weekend. ops:

Ah!! We love you LEX!! Like a brother that is!

How about a list of the screen sizes that are avaialble on the market and including the dimensions of Width plus the Height as well as the Diagonal measurement..

Trevor that's not that easy to answer since it partically depends on what aspect ratio you want to use. I will assume that you're looking only at the tradional 1.78 aspect ratio widescreen projection screens since that makes the most sense if you're considering something like the Z1, 1HD, Panny 300 etc.

The two most common screen sizes would likely be the 92" diagonal which as a height of 45" and a width of 80". These measurements don't include any outer masking at all so don't forget to add that in...esp on the top and bottom. This is very likely what I'd suggest for you given your 12 foot seating distance.

The other popular screen size would the 96" diagonal which should have a height 48" of and a width of 85".

there are larger screens but none of the projectors listed above should really be projected much larger than that since they don't really have enough lumens to give you the brightness you want.

            Thanks Andrew..

            So
            92" is 45"x80"
            96" is 48"x85"

Both sizes would fit into the front area of my Theater since the maximum allowable area would be 92" across.

I remeasured the distance from the screen to where the human head would be situated and actually have a viewing distance of 11 feet.
            That may be too close.

Given that 11 foot distance I'd go for the 92" diagonal screen since that's exactly what I have and sit the same distance away. Its plenty large enough to fill my field of view (30 degree's is what you need)

Carada makes it easy, you pick your screen size (width or height) and the set the other one by the size formula .

No Andrew, I didn't go with high contrast grey, I went with classic white. The reason was the white presentation to me was more important than blackest blacks.

Brochures from Da-Lite and Stewart show you pretty much every configuration with width, height and diagonals shown. They will pretty much make whatever you need even if what you are looking for isn't in the brochure. They also offer a lot of information on how to choose the right screen to match your particular display device.

Like Lex, I prefer the white screen. I have used a matte white 1 gain screen ( in various form like pull down, fixed, 4:3 and finally 16:9) first with a crt, then with two lcd pjs and finally with the NEC dlp. The screen seemed to work great in all cases, and for the NEC in particular. The first screen I owned was a high gain and I quickly sold it due to the narrow viewing angle. I also saw sparklies when in use with the lcd Pj. The grey screens are probably good for those who prefer better blacks from their Pjs, but the NEC really doesn't need any help in this category. I have also found that the 1 gain screens do help the blacks-challenged Pjs like my Sony lcd.

george you should see a sample of a silver screen...same boost in blacks as a grey screen but it leaves the whites white...best of both worlds
