Has to be 42"? What's your budget?

Sony and Sammy LCDs are 40"/46"/52".

I think Philips and LG make 42"

And you'll get Panny and Pioneer in 42" in plasma.

Newer plasma's don't have the longevity issues that the first ones did. They last quite long. Realistically an LCD is capable of lasting for 100k hours or whatever they say but the electronics in the TV won't last that long. I would guess that they both would last about equal amount of time. So I wouldn't listen to much to the claims that LCD's last longer. Also a plasma is going to be the best picture you can get especially if you grab one of the newer Panasonic's or Pioneer's. Look at the 750U series panny's they are incredible :B

Gotta agree with Dougie, Plasmas are really good. Tbe new Pioneer Kuro screens are fantastic but expensive. Panasonics really lovely too and cheaper.

That said, I've a new Samsung 46" 1080p and am really happy with it. Two different buddies got the 40" Samsung and the 40" Sony X3500 and while both great sets, the Sony had the edge....

It's down to the Sony 40'. 720p vs. 1080p / XBR or entry level unit.

My TV has 120 hz motion enhancement and it does really seem to help and smooth things out a lot. At 40" unless your sitting really close your not going to notice a difference between 720p and 1080p so look at the other features more rather then the resolution with that size.

Those would get my vote too. Plasma's (particularly those two) just have better PQ. Period.

If you insist on sticking with LCD though Sony, Sharp and Samsung all make nice examples.

I would have probably gone with one of their 50" versions if they (the 1080p ones) had been available when I was buying.

I saw the new Pioneer Kuro screens in London last week and they really are quite spectacular. But boy are they pricy. For a really good 40"/42" 720p plasma or lcd there should be amazing value about right now.

FWIW the 768p Pioneer Kuro plasma beat out LCD's, SXRD/LCOS/DLP RPTV's and Panasonic's excellent 1080p plasma in a multi-tech face off in the February issue of HT Mag

Personally on the more "budget" side of LCD my list starts and ends with Samsung.

I'm headed down this road myself. I have one more bulb left for my LCOS RPTV, and when that one goes in, it's time to start looking for a flat-panel. I'm so sick of replacing bulbs that I've talked myself out of front-projection when I finish my basement. Probably going to look at a 60" plasma instead.

I have the Pioneer Elite Plasma 940HD. If you watch TV all day in a sunny room, plasma is not the best (reflexion) and you sould consider Lcd. But for movie listening in a light controlled room, Plasma is better than LCD.

If you are a gamer, you should consider high resolution LCD.
