    Toshiba 50HPX95?

Anyone care to comment on this 50" plasma TV? I was considering the Panasonic 50PHD8UK but have been offered this Toshiba at a similar price. Thanks,

they sell for the same price so id imagine so... fyi the panasonics are discontinued and i imagine the toshibas are ot far away
if you want a good plasma get the pioneer...personaly i cannot differentiate between the panasonic and toshiba, other than that the toshibas frame looks strange to me... both have that double reflection problem due to two glass pannels and look horrible on low res... people look like wierd clay figures

the pioneer is the tv i notice the least macro blocking durring fast images (stated refresh rate of 2 ms), it is difficult to tell if it is the source material or the tv but something tells me the frequency of this tends to be the tvs faults as i dont notice it on the lg and samsung slim fits on the same feed!
also its ability to do darks is out of this world, truly the only plasma that impresses me

    if you are interested
go to there website and click on online authorised retailers.... ive seen one of the companies quote 3200 shipped on the 50" (us $ of course)
take that into best buy explaining that it is factory authorised and see if they will match... be nice about it and they should because i have :W

put the toshiba or panasonic on anolog or even SD 480i and compare it to the pioneer. the pioneer looks almost as good as a regular old tube (a lot of people dont realize how bad they look on analog)... also put the credits from a movie on either then look 45 degrees of axis and see how profound of a detriment two glass panels has

the pioneer also kicks it up to 72 fps when a movie is playing so no more 3:2 puulldown nonsence

The 8uk is not. The 8UK is the current commercial panasonic model meaning it has no speakers and is nothing like the one sold by the blue shirted salesmen. You should be able to get one for around $2900. I know several folks with one and everyone is mighty impressed with it and very happy. Kevin Patz here also has one. It also comes in black which is important to me because the silver plasmas are distracting to me. When watching a movie properly, I don't want to notice screen glare from the silver finish.

I'd get the Panny 8uk myself. The Pioneers are quite nice as well but not worth the extra $$$ over the Panny's IMO. But if money's not a factor......

Money is always a factor for me! I quite liked the Pioneer which I saw recently - the image seemed smoother - but I've read several threads elsewhere in which many users have experienced a pixel or two locked on red in the central part of the screen, and have faced complete disinterest from Pioneer in fixing the problem.

While I prefer the Panasonic's black frame, the Toshiba offers more for the same money in terms of connections and speakers. The price of US$2,900 that Shane suggests would be a clincher if I could get anywhere near that in Canada. The best I can do so far is C$4,300 (including a stand) which is about US$3,700. If any Canadians on this forum can suggest a cheaper, reputable source, please let me know. Thanks,

          Martyn

the comercial plasmas are older displays, couldnt tell you if they are being replaced or carried over
the consumer models will be rolling out anytime now and will be priced lower and have improved specs throughout, i do not know if they will have black trim... the older TH-50PX500U does of course

i would suggest looking at analog signal and fast action on each before making a final decision, you will be surprised, as i find most hdtvs unberable under those two conditions

also keep in mind that you utilize shorter cable runs with the pioneer as the "brain" is external also a free mounting bracket is included
im having a hard time understanding why there is so much negativity towards the pioneer on this forum, considering it has the fastest refresh rate and best contrast ratio in these price ranges
both are good, the pioneer is just better- but maybe its worth waiting until 1080p and SED is available... who knows

i assume seatle is close to you maybe a drive to a bestbuy out there is worth while, my old manager works there now so if there is anything i can do to help let me know

If the consumer models are being replaced so are the commercial ones. they both use the same glass.

Nobody has said anything negative about the Pioneer's Peter. I think both Shane and I would agree they're fine PDP's, one of the better examples out there in fact but IMO (and I assume Shane's) for the money the Panny's are hard to beat.

that has been the popular opinion, but the retail price on the 50" has dropped $1K
i think that consumer's report comparison is out the window (not that it had any credibility in terms of being a scientific survey in the first place)
the panasonic is arbitrarily superior to the toshiba, lg, samsung and philips
the only reason id even say that is because it has a film in between the two glass panels to diminish that double reflection, the phillips and samsung having the least, the lg having a longer warranty... beyond that they are all the same to me, it is my understanding that most of the panels use the exact same glass panels

turn the panels off and look at the reflections of the double images of overhead lights... it directly correlates to "fuzzy" image quality
if anyone ever gets the chance go do those comparisons i suggested
you can decide for your self... it just really surprises me that the pioneer is not more popular here considering the $$$'s people spend on there audio setups spending much more to gain differences i feel are not as profound as the differences at play here

People like many on forums follow the bang for your buck philosophy. The Pioneer is better but it costs more so you have to decide if the extra cost is worth the IMHO minimal performance difference.
