I've had a Runco 980 for many years, which I've been using with a Runco line doubler. We just started renting a Comcast HD box for our smaller HDTV. My question is this - If we wanted to watch HD through the Runco, is it as simple as buying a connecting cable with a DVI end on one side (for the Comcast box) and BNC ends on the other (for the projector), or is there more to it than that?
HD DVI to Runco 980 BNC?

I'm 99% sure you can't convert DVI to BNC. DVI is a digital connection while the BNC's are not.
You could however use component out and convert it to RGB.- Bottom

There's more to it than that. What you need is a DVI to RGBHV converter, preferably one that's HDCP compliant (or non-compliant), depending on how you look at that. You can get one here.Originally posted by eddiebermanI've had a Runco 980 for many years, which I've been using with a Runco line doubler. I use this in my system with NEC CRT projectors, mostly with 1080i or 720P inputs. Works with scaling DVD players also with DVI/HDMI outputs.

I suspected there was a conversion step needed, but was hoping to magically avoid that need. Oh well. Now to evaluate whether to commit the additional $399 to an aging setup, or put it towards a future HD projector. That's a tougher problem...
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.- Bottom

You're welcome. It's not an easy decision; in my case, I have two relatively "new" setups, one with less than 1000 hours, and a 10PG with under 500 hours. The investment is very worthwhile for me.
Good luck with your choices.

Although the price on these has gone up 50% in the last year, they're indeed a 'must have' for CRT projector buffs wanting to 'future-proof' their investment.....

To magically avoid conversion, magically avoid DVI. Substantial electronic conversion from digital DVI to analog "component" (whether BNC or not) as others here said, is required.Doug

HA! theirs a guy in Taiwan who is offering DVI input cards from many CRT projectors, and they are getting rave reviews from many CRT owners. My friend in Phoenix just got one for His Electrohome 8500 for $200. and it's very nice. He also offers them for your Runco (which is an NEC projector) as well as most of the Sony line-up. Also has stand alone's for the same price
BTW, if your only running a line doubler to your Runco you will see a major improvement by going to 720P :T
This is what I love about CRT, we refuse to die or become obsoslet and our passion for great video on the cheap keeps us relevant. Although the new sony Ruby seems to be the first reall challenge to our ultimate supremacy :P- Bottom

Yeah, well, you see, there are these upscaling DVD players like the Oppo Digital which only upscale and de-interlace on the DVI output, and ones like the Big Denon's which only upscale on HDMI (which can be converted to DVI with an adapter- it's just a plug difference between HDCP DVI and HDMI), and then there are those promised NEW formats which never seem to materialize, BUT I"M SURE will be at CES next week in some form or fashion (though I hear even Toshiba is having trouble to get their players to work reliably, forget DL BluRay), and those will ONLY have HDMI outputs with HDCP for high res, unless of course they go to the new UDP standard, which of course will be the standard for the next 10 years just like DVI and HDMI were going to be....
If you're detecting a little exasperation and grumpiness on my part, (say, just a little) you need to turn up the gain, as there is a LOT of exasperation I'm feeling with the CE industry these days.
Only reason I'm not feeling that with the PC industry is because I switched to Macs this year.
Happy New Year, all!

by juneHello All,
Will this cable work for Blu-ray & HD-DVD? Will this give us a true HD picture or a converted one?
I tried to use a hdmi to dvi cable with a comcast cable box. This didn't work, horrible converted picture. We switched back to the dvi to dvi box.-

by kennethmaI have a Runco IDP980 (8" CRT) projector which has served me well since 1996. Wish I could say the same for my Faroudja LD 100 line doubler, which was great for anamorphic DVDs but now has completely died on me. Living in Brazil now, which means buying fancy new DLP projector is not an option... -
by juneHello All,
Comcast has a new HDTV cable box verson 3 with a HDMI output. My sony HDTV only has a DVI input. The cable installer brought this new box with a HDMI to DVI cable. This didn't work properly. No picture after a hour or so of viewing. We had to switch back to component output...-
