    City of God

I first heard of this film when Ebert and Roeper both gave it a big thumbs up.

It might be hard to find. My local Hollywood didn't carry it, but Blockbusters did.

Based on a true story, in Portuguese with English sub-titles, director Fernando Meirelles tells the story of Brazilian children dragged into the world of crime and, in ultra violent fashion, portrays a world as far apart from most of our lives as Kill Bill. Sadly, most kids are denied even so much as a childhood and the condition translates itself from one generation to another.

Me, I give this film a huge thumbs up. Besides a compelling story and wonderfully drawn characters, it features some of the most creative camera work, editing, and interweaving of characters that I've found recently.

It captivated me from the first frame to the very end. Even my wife, who refuses to watch violent movies, came in around half an hour in it, sat down, and never left. When the film ended, she started it over to watch what she had missed. Seeing that the film is definitely not Mary Poppins (her kind of film), it must have something pretty strong going on.

Highly recommended if this type of movie floats your boat.

Sounds interesting, but I haven't seen it so far at any of the rental outlets here.

I got this from Netflix (just joined two weeks ago) on a recommendation from my brother.
George, this one is subtitled, so you may not be as interested, but it is one of the best films I have seen. Top 100 easily. It’s like ‘Good Fellows’ but takes place in the ghettos of Rio de Janeiro.
The difference is this is based on a true story from the eyes of a young photo journalist .
The cinematography is absolutely astounding, and plot line is fresh and masterful. Violent, yes, in a very REAL sense, but without the gratuitous sex of a Hollywood production.
No question, 5 Stars in my book.

          by George Bellefontaine
Pickings were lean at the local Blockbuster so I ended up renting Shadowboxer, a film I had passed up a few times because I thought it was just another Cuba Gooding Jr.action flick ( he has made a few recently) but boy was I wrong.

Shadowboxer stars Helen Mirren, Cuba Gooding Jr. and...

I will start shortening things up here. And just get to the salient points. But first, let me say this. Up to this point Heavens Gate was the biggest disaster in the history of filmmaking, at least from the perspective of the investors. At $40 million dollars it bankrupted UA studios. Books have been...
