SHADOWBOXER is a neo-noir film on steroids

Pickings were lean at the local Blockbuster so I ended up renting Shadowboxer, a film I had passed up a few times because I thought it was just another Cuba Gooding Jr.action flick ( he has made a few recently) but boy was I wrong.

Shadowboxer stars Helen Mirren, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Stephen Dorff. Mirren and Gooding have a strange romantic relationship; strange because Mirren had taken care of Gooding since he was a youngster, and raised him to be his partner as assassins for hire. Their relationship, and why Gooding was a candidate to become an assasin is pretty much explained in the backstory invloving a tragic and violent childhood.

Dorff is a cruel mobster who puts out a contract on his philandering pregnant wife, along with some others who know too much about him. Mirren and Gooding are awarded the contract, but Mirren has a change of heart and cannot kill the pregnant girl. She and Gooding, along with the girl and her newborn child form a curious alternative family and must make big changes in their lives in order to protect their secret from Dorff. But Dorff does learn the truth eventually and to say much more would only ruin the film for potential viewers.

This indie was directed by Lee Daniels, who was also the producer of Monster's Ball. He gets superb performances from Mirren and Gooding and the story will keep you glued to your seat. However, it has some some pretty raw violent scenes as well as some explicit sex so this is not family entertainment. What it is is what I stated in the title of this thread, a neo-noir flick on steroids.

I just saw the cover for this film while shopping the other day. Looked interesting. Now that you have given it the thumbs up, I'll add it to my queue.

Sounds like you struck gold once again, Sir George, relative to my tastes anyway.
Thanks once again for the update.

I'm a big fan of Helen Mirren, so I'll have to take a look at this. Thanks for the heads up.

            George,

Finally got to watch this a few nights ago. You hit this one dead center. What a good film this is. My wife and I enjoyed it. While Gooding and Mirren were good, Dorff keeps you saying OMG!

            Thanks for this one!!!

                by oldbob
In answer to my own question, I would say between $10,000 and $40,000 dollars. It used to be more but digital has drastically lowered the cost while at the same time making it much easier to produce a professional look.

However, this isn’t a story about reasonable. This is the true...

Now we all have learned that at the beginning of each day you are given your pages of the days work. For me that means I can figure out how I am going to utilize my crew and plan my day. The more I can get ahead of the company with pre-lighting the more time I can save production. And in film time is...

Latest press release from Parasound. I have a personal connection to this one, as I grew up in Colorado, and played sports with Columbine High School. The Columbine massacre really touched me, as I would imagine it did to all of us. I think I'm going to send a message the way of Andrew Robinson,...

I will start shortening things up here. And just get to the salient points. But first, let me say this. Up to this point Heavens Gate was the biggest disaster in the history of filmmaking, at least from the perspective of the investors. At $40 million dollars it bankrupted UA studios. Books have been...
