What's your favorite DVD and why?

Most of us here own quite a few movies and no doubt we all buy them for different reasons...some are to round out a collection or compete a series while others were bought as reference quality moves either for sound or video and others are films you love regardless of the quality etc. So with all that in mind what's your favorite DVD in your collection and why? Is it your favorite movie or one you really like the extra's on etc?

I thought about this and its really hard for me to answer. There's some movies i love to watch simply becasue of how great they look or sound but those are likely the easiest ones I could part with if I had to. I think my favorite DVD then would be the movie I like the best regardless of its reference status which would mean then that for me it would come down to one of the following discs, Sleepy Hollow, Twister or Jurassic Park (don't make me pick one!)

I own many dvds that are reference quality, but few are what I would call my favorite films. I go waaaaaayyyyy back as far as movies go, and my favorite(s) come from the 40's up and probably would not even be considered by many of the members of HT Guide. And to be honest, I really can't pick a number one favorite. There are just too many I love equally, including the titles Mr. Pratt mentioned.

Favourite movie of all time? No idea. Favourite movie since getting into HT that I like to watch on my setup. Fifth Element. It has everything(color/detail, music, action, etc) worthy to show off you HT.

Two out of three "ain't bad". :>) Two of those I enjoy immensely and have watched at least a dozen times each; one of them I can't stand at all and wonder why I even bought it. (Actually I know why -- "everyone" was raving about it as a new "reference standard" disc when it first came out and I bought it sight unseen -- something I don't do anymore.)

Even though your daughter's birth during the credits of one of them makes it special for you, I'm guessing if you were forced to pick just one, it would be the film with the line: "Roll the maps." :>) (That's one I happen to enjoy a lot, too.)

With over 1,000 movies in my DVD/LD collection, and many more that I've enjoyed over the years, it is difficult to narrow it down to just one. I listed a few that would be in the top echelon of favorites in another thread a couple of months ago. Even that list was too short to name all the ones I really treasure and watch a lot.

A "new favorite" which is really an "old favorite" (since the movie has been special to me since seeing several times it in its original theatrical release in the early 1960s and several times since including the 25th anniversary restoration road show) but which has never had a truly satisfactory home video incarnation until its recent "Super Bit" DVD release: Lawrence of Arabia. Arguably the best movie ever made. Certainly one I enjoy watching again and again -- especially since it looks and sounds so good now when I play it at home.

Gosh... lots of great movies that I like.

My favorite is probably Medicine Man starring Sean Connery.

Why? I like the movie. I like the music. I like the scenery. It has a great storyline. I can watch it time and again and never get tired of it.

Okay... my second favorite is too hard to pick.

This is a tough one. I too am an avid movie watcher. Can't really pick one above all since I have a few favourites that I like to watch depending on what genre I'm in the mood for. Here are a few of them:

Martial Arts - Return of the Dragon, The Five Deadly Venoms, Romeo Must Die
Comedy - Notting Hill, There's Something About Mary
              Suspense/Thriller - Twister, The Haunting
Action - Fast and the Furious, Gone in 60 Seconds, Bad Boys, Fifth Element
              Epic - Braveheart, Gladiator

That's just to name a few. I'm sure I could name more.

My absolute favourite movie is "Air force One". Of course I do love all the ones mentioned above but A.F.O just does something for me each time I hear the sound track.

I think my favorite movie would be T2 I don't know how many times I've watched it. For a reference DVD I would choose Gladiator.

Well, based on the way this topic is worded, my favorite DVD isn't really a movie, although it's been shown in movie theaters. It's U2's Rattle and Hum, more of an hour and a half of live concert U2 performances.

Why do I like it? Well, first, U2 is my all-time favorite band. But the way this movie is done in black and white for the first 2/3's, accompanied by some of the best performances U2 has done of each of their songs up to that point, is just fantastic. The closest thing I know to a zen-like peaceful state is to put on this DVD, play the song "Bad", crank up the volume, and lie back and sit still. It makes me cry, it's so beautiful. That song has some phenomenal bass, too, that if you don't have a low-reaching subwoofer with some power, you'll just miss.

There's some great performances by the side of streets, at Denver's McNichol's arena, with BB King, and even "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with a gospel choir in a church. Then the movie explodes into a symphony of color starting with the song "Where the Streets Have No Name", as the Edge masterfully syncs the 6/8 synthsizer intro into 4/4 time.

I LOVE this DVD, capping it off with my favorite song, "Pride". (In the Name of Love) If you haven't seen it, at the very least rent it, if not buy it, even if you're not a U2 fan. This one is fantastic.

                        Just to name a few...

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition) - Amazing movie, amazing PQ and Sound
                        Gladiator - same
Romeo is Bleeding - Incredible movie. Gary Oldman is amazing. Sound and PQ is decent.
The Matrix - Plain old FUN movie to watch. Great sound.

remember I wasn't asking about your favorite movie but your favorite DVD...for me there's a difference. Case in point Highlander is one of my favorite movies but its easily the worst DVD in my collection (even worse then Mandalay Bay's Little Princess DVD i bought glenda)

I think my favorite DVDs must be Pearl Harbor Dir. Cut, T2 Ultimate Edition and LOTR: Fellowship Extended. (And Two Towers Extended when it arrives in a few days.) They all are great movies with great music, superb sound and picture quality and great collections of interesting extras.

Now I just hope they would give Titanic and Braveheart the treatment they deserve - they could easily fill up similar 4 disc releases for those movies too (2 discs for the feature with DTS ES and commentaries, 1 disc with historical documenaries and 1 disc about the making of the movie). It's almost ironic how an 11 Oscar winning epic like Titanic only get a stripped down non-anamorphic release! Shame on you, Fox/Paramount!

I agree with Braveheart for sure. That is an epic picture up there with Gladiator and it definately deserves a full cleanup with loads of extras. Titanic would be good too, but I really like Braveheart.

I have the benefit of coming to this dance...errrr.... thread late.

The Two Towers is turning out to be a reference DVD. And I'm not talking about the actual movie at all. Disc 3, the first of the two bonus discs, is over five hours long. I've watched bits and pieces of this bonus disc over the last couple of nights, absolutely phenominal look behind the scenes. And I'm not even half-way through it.

I don't even have to go into the movie aspect of this, because it's been widely known as reference material from day 1. Anyhoo, great purchase for US$25.00, I can't think of your entertainment dollar spent any better.

I generally buy movies that have a good story first and are hopefully good in sound and picture. I am not that picky about the picture an sound as long as the picture is good and sound is decent. I usually first rent them or see them in the theater before buying them. If the movie is a keeper, I then usually pick it up at the previously viewed section at my local rental store (Rogers Video).

My favorites are (sorry can’t pick one and no "Sorry Can’t Pick One" is not a movie Burke ):

Comedy: Notting Hill, As Good As it Gets
Drama: Immortal Beloved, The Pianist, Spy Games
Can’t call it something: Bakara, Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi (need to buy them)
Action: Heat, Ronin, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Le Mans, Apollo 13
Concert: Peter Gabriel Growing up Tour, Diana Krall Live in Paris
                                  Fun: Pirates of Caribbean
Theater Showoff: Picture – Fifth Element, Sound – Diana Krall Live in Paris
And I generally like and am buying most Disney Cartoons

                                  And so on

                                  Thanks,
                                  Maziar

Hey Andrew, I can tell you what my fave is "for the moment". It's the extended cut of The Two Towers. The extra footage makes for a much better movie by filling in small but important story points (like the first movie's extended edition), and also helps make Boromir (in Fellowship Of The Ring) a much more sympathetic character. Great video, great audio, plus, it's a heck of an action movie all by itself.

My opinion on the most intense sound quality is the first 10 minutes or so of Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring. Hands down, from the beginning narration right into the initial battle scene really tests your surround system and subwoofer and either shows it off or shows its flaws. The narration coming out of the center channel is unbelieveable - sounds like a real movie theatre!! Nothing I've ever heard. Agree, disagree - is there anything better you recommend???

Currently it's DareDevil, of all things h:
First 20 min. of backplot are very well done, then the storyline drops to just above average, but the DTS audio track takes it to another level. Not just in quality, it carries the whole movie, particularly, if you have a decent HT system. Sucked me right into believing Murdock can see with sound.

Funny you mention Daredevil, Ronm. I thought the movie was decent, with FANTASTIC sound. But I really gained more appreciation for it after going through the DVD extras, learning about the movie and the Daredevil folklore more. There's some interesting stuff there, and I wouldn't be surprised if we do see a sequel.

Interestingly enough, I was sitting in Denver International Airport last night, waiting to board a plane, and the guy that is the blind consultant on the film, who appears in the DVD extras, came off the plane. I wanted to say hi, but thought that would probably appear a little weird.

Case in point Highlander is one of my favorite movies but its easily the worst DVD in my collection (even worse then Mandalay Bay's Little Princess DVD i bought glenda)
Haven't you bought "The Immortal Edition" of Highlander? Still not reference, but sooooooooooo much better than the steaming t**d that was the first release. Plus some scenes put back in the movie which fill it out (favorably, IMO).

As for my favorite DVD, geez, couldn't begin to pick. Probably FOTR EE, if any.

                                                For Sound :

Dianna Krall - for those who say they can not tell the difference between Dolby Digital and DTS, this DVD is mandatory.

                                                For every other reason :

LOTR ( both extended versions ). These disks use the DVD format to its fullest potential (extras, sound options, commentaries). All other DVD's should aspire to be put together as well as LOTR.
