Abandon

Stars: Katie Holmes, Benjamain Bratt
Maybe I was tired...I'm not sure and by now I don't really care. This character driven movie is slooooow, tooooooo sloooow. The pacing, while consistent, is, at the same time off.
Screenwriter Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) makes his directorial debut. The movie is dark, really dark, moody, gloomy (insert any other word that means the same as boring). It is interlaced with momemts of flashbacks that are quite natural and work with the style set out by the director but do nothing to save a poorly laid out, oxygen deprived, plot.
The acting is fine but you never really come to care much about the characters (and for a character driven movie....that's a huge problem). The story line doesn't capture your interest and by the time the movie's ending rolls around, the fact that it doesn't really payoff comes as no suprise. The trailers that I saw suggested a different movie...more thriller than drama and maybe that was patch work for something that really amounts to a B-movie, with a movie-of-the-week feel. It wants to be more....but when it's this dull it never has a fighting chance.
