    Narc isn't pretty...

NARC, written and directed by Joe Carnahan, starring Ray Liotta and Jason Patric.

This film ain't pretty to watch. It deals with a side of life most of us are spared. And the director doesn't pull any punches in showing us just what makes narcotic detectives tick.

Liotta and Patric are teamed up to solve the killing of an undercover cop ( a friend of Liotta's). Along the way we learn that both of these guys have a good side in conflict with a bad side. The truth comes out at the end and it wasn't how I thought i saw it.

Terrific acting here from both Patric and Liotta, but Liotta's performance stands out playing what will probably be the role of his acting life. I don't recall if this was too late for the Oscars, or if it was just overlooked, but it deserves some awards , and it deserves an audience that hopefully the dvd release will provide.

It is a small film, shot on a tight budget. So tight that the producers ran out of funds. The main actors stuck it out and got paid later, but Liotta and Patric worked for a lot less because they believed in what Carnahan was trying to do with this film. Tom Cruise jumped aboard as an executive producer , and with his name connected things got a little better moneywise and Paramount even got involved.

Now rumor is that because Cruise liked Narc and Carnahan's work so much, Carnahan may be the director of the next Mission Impossible installment. One thing is certain, we haven't heard the last of Joe Carnahan.

I bought this because it is the kind of gritty, real life kind of cop films I like. But this is not a feel good kinda film, so I recommend a rental first.

A tightly written, well directed, well acted film that earns :45: in my opinion.

Saw it today George. I agree with your assessment totally. Won't say anything more because I don't want to act as the spoiler. Very good work though, with powerful directing, cinematography, and acting.

Glad you liked it, Keith. You are so correct. It is very difficult to say much about the plot without giving away the ending, which though a twist, was very credible.
