    Kon-Tiki (2013)

    What a ripping good yarn!

When I was a boy back in the late 1950s / early 60s Thor Heyerdahl was a household name. Heyerdahl was a Norwegian explorer who had sailed across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands in a balsa wood raft to prove that people from South America could have settled Polynesia 1,500 years ago. As you can see from the photographs of his raft Kon-Tiki below this was a remarkable feat. The 5,000 mile journey, which he undertook in 1947, took him and his five companions 101 days.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, 66 years later they’ve made an adventure film about the expedition and it is well worth watching.

    Nigel.

I really enjoyed this film. The blu-ray I rented offered a Norwegian ( with English subtitles ) and an English version. Strangely enough, the foreign version was longer but I don't like subtitles so I chose to watch the English version. I don't know what was left out, but I felt the English version was complete enough.

I remember vividly the National Geographic special on Thor Heyerdahl’s incredible adventure when I was just a young lad back in the early ‘70’s. Looking back, I suppose you could say he was defining 'extreme sports' long before anyone ever coined the phase.

This amazing story taught me at an early age to never blindly accept conventional wisdom or belittle those with views or convictions different from my own.

A lesson well learned, Bill, and one I have always subscribed to.

I saw the original Kon-Tiki (the boat) in Oslo, 2001.

Latest press release from Parasound. I have a personal connection to this one, as I grew up in Colorado, and played sports with Columbine High School. The Columbine massacre really touched me, as I would imagine it did to all of us. I think I'm going to send a message the way of Andrew Robinson,...

How much should a student first time film cost?
                      by oldbob
In answer to my own question, I would say between $10,000 and $40,000 dollars. It used to be more but digital has drastically lowered the cost while at the same time making it much easier to produce a professional look.

However, this isn’t a story about reasonable. This is the true...

I found "Antiviral" rather an odd film. Perhaps I don't have the intellect to appreciate it fully? The male hero of "Antiviral" works at a medical clinic that infects fans of sick celebrities with live viruses taken from their bodies, for a price of course. He also sells illegal...

This light hearted action film has so many big names in it I'd hate to think how large the payroll was. The big names include Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The film is almost 2 hours long. After an hour I switched it off and did...

This film is a harmless bit of fun. Watching it definitely makes 1 hour and 45 minutes go faster than attending a PowerPoint presentation about my company’s go-to-market strategy. If the film had been directed by Joe Schmuck I would have understood, but it wasn’t. It was directed by Kenneth Branagh...
