    The American good if...

... you like character study films, because this is exactly what The American is, pure and simple. There's not a lot of action, but when it happens, it is quite realistic. George Clooney is great as the disturbed and weary assassin who is coming to terms with what his life has been all about and now seeks to find a way out, especially now that he has met a woman he loves.

Slow moving but highly interesting IMHO. Great cinematography of the beautiful Italian countryside looks marvelous on blu-ray. A must see ( and a must own ) for character-driven-film lovers. :T

First saw this on a flight to Aruba (for a long-overdue honeymoon). One of my favourite films of the past several years and I will be adding to my BD collection so I can more fully appreciate it.

Excellent movie on many levels, not least of which is the performance of Clooney.

Glad to hear you liked it as much as I, Paul. This film was misrepresented in the way it was promoted. Most people thought it was another Bourne type action flick so there was a lot of disappointed filmgoers. They expected one thing and got another. I had read enough reviews about The American to fully understand what it was all about. It is just an excellent, well acted, well directed film that I hope will eventually find its audience.

Far too many films are "mispromoted" like that. Two Nic Cage films come to mind--The Weatherman and Lords of War. Neither was a classic, but I liked each one. However, I did have to overcome the expectations created by their woefully misleading trailers.

Trailers have become so often misleading that I usually make a game of it when they are included on a disc--I watch the film first (to avoid the expectations issue) and then try to guess, based on what I've just seen, how far off the mark the trailer will be. To be fair, some are quite well-done and appropriate but others are laughable (still others reveal far too many critical story elements).

Gotta love the trailers that give you every high point of the movie and then the entire time there is nothing good coming that you haven't already seen. Pretty sad they have to go to such lengths to promote the thing.

              American Sniper

I spun this BD the other day in a series of 3 films that I rented (see other two reviews listed here). This is a very good, well done film! This movie is more about the emotional toll that going to war and shooting people has on people than the war itself....

Jeez, I'm not even sure where to begin with this one, so I'll just be blunt: It stunk.

Extremely boring and, except for a coupla decent shoot 'em up scenes just pointless. My wife loves Clooney but even him prancing around in a few scenes with his shirt off couldn't save it for her....
