Well the re-release at the theater contain 9 extra minutes. Cameron has said this will not be the directors edition later this year. Cameron has said that would probably be over an hour longer.

Here we go. Milking the multi-release cow for everything it's worth. :nonod:

Full disclosure: I'll buy the hour-plus longer Director's Edition if it eventually exists.

Went looking for tidbits on the 'net and found these comments from the IMAX CEO.

THere are some trailers online with some shots of the news scenes.

They did announce this release at the same time the last came out, so I wouldn't judge them too harshly.

The version I now own is long enough. In fact, I wasn't all that enthralled with the story. It was the eye candy that kept my attention. I'll be sticking with what I now have.

I like the original theatrical cut of "Avatar" and am glad to have that version on an excellent BluRay. If the added material of an extended edition, ahem, materially enhances the story line, character development and/or the "gee whiz" factor without unnecessarily slowing down the narrative pace or making the whole thing just seem too long (as long as the original is, it flies by, even on repeated viewing, unlike the extended edition of Return of the King, for example) then I'll be in line to purchase the extended edition to add to my collection.

But it is hard to predict what an hour of extra footage would do to the story or the character development. It really depends on what the extra scenes entail, and how they fit in with what was already there. Francis Ford Coppalla gave us a remarkable new look at "Apocolypse Now" with his "Redux". Cameron's own "Aliens" benefited greatly from the added material in the "Director's cut", while Milos Foreman nearly destroyed his masterwork "Amadeus" with the bogged down pace, too-obvious exposition and recapitulation, and some scenes that played like an SNL parody of the original movie in the "Director's cut".

So I'll wait to find out what we're getting before I promise to plunk down any money for an extended version of "Avatar".

What you DON'T say may be held against you...

When Ridley Scott released "Legand" in 1985 I couldn't wait to see it. I remember thinking that the director that gave us "Duelist" would deliver the best fantasy film of all time. :E       Instead we got the most hokey fantasy film of all time....

Ok, it seems like about a 5 year plan to me. From Avatar, to Terminator, to Mission Impossible, to Mad Max, to Hobbits, and Hunger Games. There's more sequels left...

What a great movie. This one has become a perennial holiday favorite. Now for the 20th Anniversary, a Special Edition 2-disc DVD has been released.

Great story. It's a compilation of numerous short stories by the author about his life as a child, keeping the primary plot line throughout...
