That Thing You Do – Extended Edition

If you like the movie and don’t already have a copy of this movie on DVD, then this two disc edition is a “must buy”. It not only has the “Extended Cut” but also the original theatrical release with improved video and audio over the previous release.

If you like the movie and DO already have a copy of this movie on DVD, then this two disc edition is still a “must buy”. It not only has the “Extended Cut” but also the original theatrical release with improved video and audio over the previous release.

If you didn’t like the movie first time around because you thought we heard way too much of the title song but didn’t get to know enough about the characters, then the “Extended Edition” may just be the ticket for you too, with its additional 40 + minutes of footage seamlessly integrated into the original movie. You’ll still hear just as much of the title song (which I happen to like a lot), and you will get a lot of extra information about the main characters that helps us understand their responses to a lot of the events that sort of “flew by” in the original. I’m not going to detail what the extra scenes bring to the movie, since reading such a list may spoil the discoveries while watching the movie. Besides, that information is readily available elsewhere.

Not to say that the original can’t stand on its own. I enjoyed it when it was first released and on about a dozen occasions since then. Watching the Extended Cut for the first time was sort of like catching up with old friends at a reunion and hearing about things that happened “back when” in a new light. Actually I’m kind of glad to have become acquainted with the movie via the theatrical version and then had the opportunity to see more via the Extended Cut. It really worked well, for me, anyway.

Not all “director’s cut” or “extended edition” versions of movies on DVD strike me that way – hated the way “Amadeus -- Director’s Cut“ was needlessly bloated, found the tacked on scenes unnecessary in "Stripes -- Unrated Extended Cut" and really prefer the theatrical version of “Return of the King” over the Extended Edition. However, “That Thing You Do – Extended Cut” joins such highly successful efforts as “Aliens”, "Apocalypse Now --Redux" and “Fellowship of the Ring” where the extra scenes in the extended edition have added enough value to justify the significantly longer running time.

Huh... I'll have to rent it to check it out, I think. Enjoyed and bought the first, but probably not enough to buy it again.

Funny, almost everyone that I know that saw this movie just hated it. I really liked it at the time and then watched it again over Easter and I still really liked it. I really enjoyed the song too. Either way, I'll probably rent first too.

With great anticipation, I purchased the Extended Edition BluRay collection of the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) trilogy after work yesterday, and "cancelled all appointments" to start giving the disks a spin. As a self-confessed Sci-Fi nut, I've been awaiting this release for some time. I managed to pick up a copy after work last night and dug right into it, after getting home.
The extended edition was in all its glory just as i remembered seeing it years ago. There's so much extra plot/scenes in...

This is one great movie and great dvd. The story is of a budding rock journalist as he follows a band on tour. That tour basically changes his life.

The DVD contains the theatrical edition as well as the extended edition. I watched the theatrical version first and was amazed at how great...
