Here's a little slice of life film about a would be jazz pianist who must make a living by writing ad jingles for a Manhattan agency. He has a failed marriage as well, so it is obvious from the opening that Harvey ( Dustin Hoffman ) is a very unhappy man. His daughter was raised by his ex-wife's husband and now she is getting married in England. Harvey's boss encourages him to go, which he does reluctantly, only to find himself treated as a second class guest, rather than the father of the bride. To add insult to injury, Harvey's daughter feels that her stepdad is the one who should give her away, and to top things off, Harvey's boss obviously had ulterior motives in encouraging Harvey to go to England, and tells him in a phone call that his services are no longer required. Then along comes Kate ( Emma Thompson ). Her life is also wanting and when she and Harvey meet there is a connection that offers a last chance for both.
Though this is well acted and well directed, I do feel that Hoffman's character was more fully developed than Emma's. I just would have liked to know more about her. But other than that, this is an excellnt little film.
I know drama/romance is not for everyone, but if you like character-driven movies, then watching Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson exercise their great acting chops will be well worth the price of the rental.
